Sony FDR-AX53 and Alpha A6300 with 16mm Pancake

Recommended Posts

Looking to spend some of my winter earnings on (what for me will be) a couple of significant camera upgrades.

Understand these cameras are just now coming to market but looking for any info from others who have used the preceding Sony models to which these are upgrades; specifically with regard to remote tongue switch adapters (I have Conceptus tongue switch currently for Canon) for the mirrorless and HypeEye/CamEye compatibility/limitations/workarounds for the Handycam.

All comments / suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Presuming the A6300 uses the same multi-terminal control port as the A5100, A6000 etc, to use your Conceptus tongue switch you'll need a 2.5mm to multi-terminal conversion adaptor.

Such adaptors are available from various shops online, one of which is from me (www.skyswitches.com) - it comes with a right angled connector on the sony multi-terminal connector, for £16 + shipping.

Other brands are available, and I'm sure the likes of Chutingstar stock some from others.
Sky Switches - Affordable stills camera tongue switches and conversion adaptors, supporting various brands of camera (Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic).

Though I have no solution for a work around technique to compensate a hypeeye for the AX33/53 to have a status indication during freefall I've seen some guys using a little piece of plastic that clips the viewfinder in place (pulled out) to make sure the cam is running and then work with the sound of the cam itself for recording indication.
With helmet on and earplugs in, turbine running it does proof difficult to hear it, though :S

It's not world changing but it makes things a little easier.

How is the field of view on the AX-53 ? Will it match a 16mm without a wide lens attached ? Will it still auto focus if a wide angle lens is attached ? Can you still get the awesome depth of field with a wide angle lens attached ? Is it working out for skydiving vids ?

Those are all good questions I can't answer yet, as I haven't purchased (or jumped) the cameras yet. I'd love to know the answers, too!

According to published specs, the AX-53 has a 35mm equivalent field of view of 26.8 mm in 16:9 4K mode (at widest zoom setting). The 16mm pancake when used with an APC sized sensor like the A6300 has a 35mm equivalent field of view of 24 mm. Seems a good enough fit for me.
