Nikon D200..... deal or no deal ?

Recommended Posts

so here's the scoop...

I'm perusing Craigslist and i come upon someone who wants to part with a Nikon D200 body only...:|
College student Roch. Inst. of Tech. ( R I T )

well i'm happy with my D70S but...
I could be Happier with a D200...B|

i'm guessing that it takes the same battery and charger as my D70S....
true?? or No??

since it doesn't appear like the charger is included.

I think the D200 is heavier,, but i can live with that.
seller asks 650 USD
i offer less.
seller indicates they will accept 550 USD...

i'm thinking
DEAL!!!

any reason(s) it should be NO DEAL????..

help me quick friends...
wanna close this deal by thursday.

Saskia???
J Agard?
namgrunt??

all you Nikon lovers out there??

helllllllp !!!

Charger is the same, battery not (the D200 battery can be used in the D70s but not the other way round).

D200 is a great jumping camera for sure. Won't last as long on a charge as a D70s but still plenty long. The D200 is heavier than the D70s of course but for me it's worth it, especially since now I only jump a CX105 anyway. It's heavy for lots of jumping so I hesitated for a while to sell my D80 but I'm happy with this camera.

Do check the clicks before buying any 2nd hand DSLR (use a program like Opanda and check a recent pic taken with the camera), a few thousand up to say 20000 clicks is fine for a semi-pro camera, more = lower price or maybe not buy it if it's been used professionally.

A big plus: the remote for a D200/D300 is easier to jump (harder to damage) than the D70s/D80/D90 remotes.

The camera is more weather proof (something I appreciated last week.... B|)

Bigger LCD screen, better autofocus, very good lighting (the D70s is no slouch there either), possible to shoot RAW + JPEG fine.

Also you can use manual lenses with ease, should you have any.

Price seems fair (in our market, don't know about USA) provided the camera doesn't have loads of clicks and is in good shape.

$550 is not that great of a deal, its decent but not great. Look out here for current used pricing on most camera gear in theire Buy/Sell forum (you might need a log in ID to search): http://fredmiranda.com.

Looks like there are multiple D200's with Grips plus accessories for $550-625.

Exactly the feedback i had hoped for...

too bad about battery incompatability but the charges on my 2 D70s
batteries last for days. :)so if i stay on top of the D200 and maybe spring for a spare, it could be ok.
Will my charger for the D70S work?? for the battery of the D200?

I appreciate your point about checking the #'s.. could be tough to do [:/] ...Can i put a card into the 200, fire the shutter a few times, and then read the properties??? are shutter activations monitored within the camera???
i will check to see.

the weight can be tolerated. I have been fashioning a flash/ bracket combo with the same manfrotto quick release that is on my HC 3.. I decided cannot carry a Flash And a video camera, since i do not wanna go Wider, with anything
and cannot safely stack or otherwise position the flash.

So i said the heck with it.. I'll forego the video, have a fast connect set up on the SB-800 and run That,,, side by side with my top mounted dSLR...clipping it to the fixed bracket used for the video...
I expect i can swap out these two SLR models...:|[:/] Are they roughly similar in side to side dimensions??.. i can check some places to learn those numbers....

Phree... as always, helpful information
thanks for the link.
:| Not really shopping for anything, and for SURE!! don't need to spend the $$$$$ but i'm a curious kinda guy, and when i saw that ad, and saw it to be from nearby,,, i got to thinking....
might be worth breaking open the piggy bank...;):)
i'll keep you posted.

Thanks Laszlo

I spoke to the seller late this afternoon.

Photo student, Just graduated,,
bought the camera new,
sale includes Body, Two batteries, charger, usb cable, cd, and owners manual. Not sure if she'll include any compact flash card (s)

Said she's been shooting more film, than digital and wants to buy a Hasselblad film camera......
and so is selling this "lightly used Nikon"
said she's lined up work in NY City. She couldn't say just how many shutter activations, but i gathered from her answers to some questions, that it's NOT 10's of Thousands, or anywhere near that...

i plan to look at it on friday.
I'm pleased about the 2 batts. and charger

I hope to find this item to be in very good condition...

thanks all

well the Deal is Done...

met with the seller who was cordial and punctual...

the camera is in clean and very good condition..

The seller included a charger with power cable, 2 batteries, usb cable, video out to analog video cable, ( to allow for running slide shows on a screen,) and a camera bag...

550, hard earned dollars
went from my hands to her hands.

craigs list. over the past 4 months or so.

Nikon D200 ..................... 550
70mm to 300mm lens ..... 200
SB-80 flash ...... 400

above set-up complete, 1,150...

Body only on the D200 new was around 1,500...

alllll components are in very good to excellent condition,,,

'and most everything for the D200 is compatible with the D70s...
except for the remote jack, which plugs into the body, and accepts the tongue switch

...well can't have EVERYthing,, i guess....
still need to get the adapter for that...
