rigging65 0 #4 May 23, 2003 Pack volume is in cubic inches. Area is in square feet...and no, not everyone uses the same method to come up with square footage. PIA tried for years to get a standard measurement scale put in place, but some of the canopy Mfgs. did want to give in and do it like everyone else. Why would you not want the public to know that your canopy is smaller/larger than what it actually is?? Let's all say it together now: MARKETING Heaven forbid they just give you the info and let you choose what works best for you... Could be, although within the same family it's very likely that a 150 is really 50% larger than a 100. There are a dozen ways to measure canopy size - projected size, topskin surface, bottom skin surface, through the chord etc - and manufacturers seem to mix n match. One canopy, the Safire 1, actually intentionally changed the size to make people think they were getting a different sized canopy! They don't do that any more (fortunately.) Im very aware that different manufactures measure differently, but what is intresting here is that within the same family (in this case Spectre) the 107 - 120 difference is actually 36sqft. but 120 - 135 difference is only 7 sqft. so even within the same family these measures dont seem to be equally progressive. When Icarus was ready to launch the safire (and omega, it affected both of them) in the US, all of the canopies were produced through license by Precision. Icarus had given the specs to PA on how to construct and measure the canopy. It was found out some months later that PA had gone on their own and used their own measuring method. Icarus decided to keep the safire and omega sizes smaller than they were stated (and never hesitated to mention, I bought a safire 209 at 90 jumps and was told of it before we got past hello) as to not cause confusion on someone haveing a european safire 209 a different size than an american one. They stopped using PA (for more than that reason) and waited until the new versions of the canopies to put the sizing back to their standard way (the same as PD). What Icarus does not tell you was how PA put out all the money for promotion of the line, filled orders for Icarus which the customer paid Icarus directly for, and oops forgot to pay Precision for their canopies. Enter the Ground Zero line, a far superior line of canopies, and they don't have to deal with Icarus. Of course Icarus had to create a whole new line (safire2, Omni) so they could sell in the US because PA owned the license.
