Xaos-21 120 vs Katana 120

Recommended Posts

You'll be loading it 1.66. I jump a 21 loaded the same. IMHO a 21 would be perfect around 1.8.

I have never flown a katana but I bet overall at that WL it would be a better canopy.

For comparison, my other canopy is a Viper 105 loaded the same. It is IMO an overall better canopy, better openings, bottom-end flare, and lighter front riser pressure.

Don't get me wrong I like my 21 but I know to feel the advantages of it you need to load it more than 1.66.

Your comparing a 7 cell crossbrace to a 9 cell high performance canopy...

I would have top say the first thing you will see is the Katana has a better aspect ratio for forward glide.

But it depends on what you want to do with the canopy...

I have a friend that has a Katana 97 and has flown my Xaos 27 cell 98. His impression is that the Xaos had a more efficient swoop (longer) but felt a lot slower in the air. The Katana losses more altitudes in turns and is much more ground hungry than a Xaos.

who is best in quality and performance. I'm just looking for some general info on these canopies compared to each other.

Depends on how you define "performance" and your wingloading.

At higher wingloadings (> 1.8) the cross-braced will be plenty peppy and swoop farther.

I tried a Extreme FX 119 with 200 pounds out the door and found that compared to a conventional elliptical t was unresponsive and not much fun to fly (although it stalled slower and dived steeper so it should go farther). The 104 responded more like a conventional elliptical.
