Rocky Point Mexico 2004

Recommended Posts

Dates: Thursday, 29 April 2004 – Sunday, 2 May 2004

Where: Rocky Point, Sonora, Mexico. Rocky Point is an informal American name for Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Cost: $25 registration fee, jumps from 13,000 for $20 each from a Skydive Arizona Twin Otter. We cannot process credit cards and will not accept checks. You must have cash.

Requirements: The landing area is a long beach. At high tide it can be quite narrow, less than half the width of the north landing area at Skydive Arizona. Behind this beach is a congested campground and hotel complex. Skydivers are strongly advised to have water landing gear on every jump. Exits are over the ocean and in the event of a low pull or reserve ride, a water landing is a very real possibility. Skydivers with round reserves are required to have water landing gear. Due to the hazardous nature of the landing area, a C license and proof of currency are required. Bring your USPA card, logbook, and an in date reserve.

Food and Lodging: There are numerous hotels and restaurants, some within walking distance. The host site is a campground with two hotels close by. To reserve a camp site, call Dawn Rae at 602-421-0696. The campground, Playa Bonita, is where manifest will be located. This camp ground is fairly crowded but has all the conveniences: full RV hook ups, showers, laundry, ice, etc. Reservations are essential because the campground often fills up.

Travel: Rocky Point is about a three hour drive from Skydive Arizona. You can not take rental cars across the border without authorization from the rental company. The road is a good quality paved road, and the border crossing is open all day. You will need a passport to re-enter the US. Most US auto insurance policies are invalid in Mexico but you can buy short term insurance at the stores in Why, Arizona, on the way.

Other things to do: Beaches are nice and swimming is OK, but Rocky Point’s existence revolves mainly around the shrimp fishing industry and partying Americans. This is a great place to wind surf or sail (you’ll need your own equipment) and there are supposedly some good fishing spots. It is easy to launch small boats from the beach, but for trailered boats you will need to use the boat ramp in town. It is a good town to shop for Mexican crafts, there are some pretty fair seafood restaurants in town, and several bars or night clubs provide night life. The area is very popular with OHV riders because of its large sand dunes.

Organ Pipe National Monument is on the US side of the border, with excellent desert hiking. Spring is a particularly good time for this, as wild flowers will be in bloom.

The border at Lukeville is closed from Midnight to 6am. You do not need a passport but should be able to prove that you are a citizen or have a legal right to enter the US.
