Interesting CRW Attempt

Recommended Posts

Check out this CRW attempt NASA will be trying in September. They're going to try to catch a small sample return capsule dropping in from space using a helipcopter. The goal is to bring home samples of the solar wind that the Genesis spacecraft has collected over the past 2 years.

I can't wait to see the video. Maybe they need volunteers for practice runs....

Wow, that's not even a good photoshop.

Seriously it's not a new idea. NASA has been doing mid air recoveries since the 50's. Usualy if it's a helo pickup they will use a CH-53 or derivitive.

Interesting. John LeBlanc was just telling us how PD was trying to invent this sort of canopy for them, and after cutting it away (60 sq ft with a line across the top for the chopper to catch it), it inflated and he tried to catch it himself.....only to have it wrap up on his foot and turn into a small downplane!

edit to add - he mentioned he was jumping with four canopies at the time - the only reason he attempted it.

They want to catch the wind. Very cool.

I hope they're careful not to break it!
(especially not on the plane;))
