Question about drogue

Recommended Posts

I am just curious -- what happens to the drogue when a tandem chute deploys? There's no pilot chute, right? Is the drogue attached to the main in the same way? If so, what keeps the main from deploying before the pull?

Thanks!

(I was going to ask my instructor when I get to the DZ, but I couldn't wait. :)

The drogue acts like a pilot chute at deployment time. The system is similar to a pilot chute-deployed regular sport rig, except there is a "catch" to allow the drogue to provide drag for the tandem pair in freefall instead of beginning deployment immediately. When either of the main ripcords is pulled, the "catch" is released and the drogue opens the container and extracts the canopy.

That's how it works on the systems I've seen. I don't know what brand they are or what variations you can expect.

There is a 3 ring release system on the drogue bridal. The instructor pulls one of 2 release handles that allow the drogue to perform the function of a pilot chute. That's on the Strong Tandem Dual Hawk system. Relative Workshop's Sigma doesn't use the 3-ring release on the drogue but it's conceptually the same.
