Why should they have helped him out? He was fired for plagiarism (a common offense here in Speaker's Corner, but a well known firing offense in academia) and for fabricating research (also a big no-no). He was not fired after the infamous "Eichman" essay. Free speech has never included the right to make shit up and pass it off as legitimate research, nor does it include the right to appropriate the work of others and claim it as your own. Now, he may have invited scrutiny by publishing controversial views, but the scrutiny only revealed "firing offense" things he did of his own free will.

He wasn't fired for being a douche, he was fired for being a liar.

He was both

And I think the real reason and the stated reason were different

He must have thought so too, hence the law suit

Why do you care what he thought? I certainly don't.

The paper he wrote that caused the fuss had been out there for four years before the fuss started.

Have made a personal attempt to read that paper, I am certain that it just took that long for someone to actually make it all the way through the turgid thing.:S

As soon as the fuss started, the school officials started looking really hard for something to fire him over, and finally dug up something and acted. I wonder how many current professors would stand up to such scrutiny.

I agree

It would be hard to argue any other way given what is known

About as many as Speakers Corner regulars who would stand up to an IRS audit, I'd guess.

Hey, at least the prof. didn't kill a bunch of first graders, or maim a congresswoman, or shoot dead a bunch of folks at a Batman movie, or kill a load of college students, or shoot up a high school.

You see you speak to the catch 22 here. Most schools are free shooting zones so teachers are not allowed to have guns. Now some argue that arming teachers could save children. But since they mostly are nutty I would argue teachers having guns is more dangerous

There is a thread in here somewhere that shows teachers and guns are a bad combination.

So your point is correct only because they are not allowed to have guns
