Bush 'involved' in CIA leak case

A former White House press secretary has said the US president was involved in misinforming the public over the leaking of a CIA agent's identity.

In an excerpt from his book, Scott McClellan says George W Bush helped mislead the public over the role in the affair of two White House aides.

The CIA agent, Valerie Plame, says her identity was leaked because her diplomat husband opposed the Iraq war.

The White House said Mr Bush would not ask anyone to pass false information.

Lawsuit

Mr McClellan's book is not scheduled for publication until April and the excerpt released was brief.

It refers to a White House press conference he attended in 2003.

WHAT IS CIA LEAK CASE ABOUT?

* Libby was found guilty of lying to the FBI and a grand jury over revelations about CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity
* Critics said the White House leaked Ms Plame's identity to undermine her husband, ex-ambassador Joseph Wilson
* He had publicly cast doubt on the Bush administration's case for war in Iraq
* The alleged cover-up, rather than the leak itself, was the subject of the Libby trial

Q&A: CIA leak case

At the conference, Mr McClellan told journalists that the two aides Karl Rove and Lewis "Scooter" Libby were "not involved" in leaking Ms Plame's identity.

The excerpt reads: "There was one problem. It was not true.

"I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice-president, the president's chief of staff, and the president himself."

Mr McClellan, who served as press secretary from 2003 to 2006, has made no further comment on the excerpt.

Libby, Vice-President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, is the only person charged over the affair. He was sentenced to 30 months in jail for obstructing an inquiry into the leaking of the identity.

However, Mr Bush intervened in July to prevent Libby from serving a prison term.

Ms Plame said Mr McClellan's excerpt was "shocking".

"I am outraged to learn that former White House press secretary Scott McClellan confirms that he was sent out to lie to the press corps.

Lewis Libby

"Even more shocking, McClellan confirms that not only Karl Rove and Scooter Libby told him to lie but Vice-President Cheney, presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card and President Bush also ordered McClellan to issue his misleading statement."

Current White House press secretary Dana Perino said the meaning of the excerpt was unclear.

However, she said: "The president has not and would not ask his spokespeople to pass on false information."

In July a judge dismissed a civil lawsuit brought by Ms Plame against Mr Cheney and other Bush administration officials.

She maintained her cover had been blown after her husband, Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador, said the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence on Iraq to back its case for war.

White House press secretaries are paid to lie for the President.

DUH

In THIS White House the Politics of Division and Derision are far more important than the careers and lives of the people who are charged with getting the information that allows our country to remain safe.>:(

The lives of our young men and women who signed up to protect our country are being used and wasted in a far off land to enrich a few people at the top in an incompetent exercise in building a nation that has no business of ever being created.. all fortold by the PNAC Masters in their own documents.

Ask yourself who has actually benefited from the looting of our treasury in this unnecessary war against a people who did not even attack us on 9/11. 9/11 was the reason so many of your young patriots joined our military to protect our country and this administration could not even get that part of their supposed leadership right.>:(>:(>:(>:(

AS King George has said so ineloquently in the past..."If you are not with us, you are against us".
It is quite obvious that what is good for America.... is not necessarily good for the Administration[:/]

I say:
Would it be rude to ask Ms. Perino "WTF do you mean "it's unclear"? It can't possibly get much clearer:D

Looks the the story has finally made it back to the US from across the pond. This just in 18 minutes ago.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/21/cia.leak.mcclellan/index.html
Looks like the book isn't finished yet. I wonder how well the story will flow after they redact 399 of the pages;)

McClellan is just one more liar from an administration full of liars.

From previous McClellan statements (about Iraqi WMDs):

“This is about an imminent threat.” Scott McClellan, Feb 2003

"The administration never said Iraq was an imminent threat. The media have chose to use the word 'imminent' to describe the Iraqi threat." Scott McClellan, Jan 2004

On the record, of course.

................................
who has benefited?? usually high end stockholders of Company's like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and any other business which
get's "invigorated' by a war.. I while ago i saw an article which named 6 or 8 companies, whose stock prices have better than doubled, since the Irag war began.. I wish i saved those names and details.. but every stock symbol, mentioned in that article, when clicked, could show a five year trend that was a green line going UP.... bigtime... 2 - 300 percent...in many cases...
I wonder if any "administrators" or "policy makers" also happen to be stock holders of such companies???...

NO sir !!!!! If YOU are not with US.... ( and HE is NOT with the "common man".. the taxpayer, the one who foots the bills,,,,),, then you are a monarchy, NOT a democracy..

If the man who spouts that term ( democracy) over and over, doesn't even GET that his job is to do the bidding of the people through the work of the legislative and judicial systems,,,
then as we have seen,,, all is lost..

Like many executives,,, our current exec. branch of govt., is about doing what they want,,, passing the buck, covering their asses, and in another year or so,, dancing away from this whole world wide mess..( with the most "goldenest" of golden parachutes),,,,, to "retire , hunt, write their memoirs", and live in blissful happiness ... unconvinced and unrepentant of the damage they have done.....at Home AND abroad......:|:|

So to hear he "lied"..:o.. I'm not surprised...:S:|:|
ALL executives lie ... don't they???:P;)
