why do some people idolize this guy?

Don't they realize that if all businesses are under state control, then Chavez runs them all? Why is he considered the people's hero, when he really just wants to control ALL of industry? He's worse than the most greedy capitalist could ever dream of being, so why is he considered the people's hero?

I can't stand the man, but from what I've read he's done a lot to provide for the poor in his country.

To me, it all looks like government handouts, but to the recipients I'd bet it's viewed as manna from heaven.

Some of it has to do with his race, just like the new president of Bolivia -- they are of Amerindian descent rather than the typical white leader in power. Hugo Chavez grew up in a thatched palm leaf house; he came from nothing.

He's also a brilliant demagogue. And whether you like him or not (just making it clear: I don't; his tightening stranglehold on democracy is troubling), the man does have a spine and a large set of cajones, IMO.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
