computers and the internet

Joe gets up on soap box
Quote

I'm starting this thread because I got jumped on
for making a comment about a web page that
required registration for access.

I'm going to speak in generalities here because
no one is to blame for anything in particular, but
I know many folks out here haven't been on this
planet as long as I have (not meaning you have
more air time; though you probably do!) and
many probably didn't start programming
computers on a TTY terminal back in
the '70s as I did, and there's probably
very few of you who have not been
connecting your computer to
those of other folks for as
long as I have (remember BBSes?)

Anywaze, I should have been jumped on for
straying from the topic instead of having
folks try to explain to me why I was wrong.

The point I was trying to make was that
registering for access like that is pointless.

Registration provides no security.
The person can register from a temporary
email address which is as secure - as one
person pointed out - as an IP provided
to users of such as AOL or dialups..
..virtually nil.

The whole site can still be downloaded.
I'm not going to tell you how, because
that is a reason given for
the registration requirement and
I don't want to cause its owner more
grief than has already been experienced.

If you don't mind having hundreds of
nicknames and corresponding passwords;
I guess things like this won't bother you.

If you use the same nickname and
password for access to more than one
place you may find that to be a mistake;
or you may be one of the lucky few.

If you use a "password keeper" or the
(yikes!!) Windows password manager;
you are at the mercy of the person
who programmed it - good luck.

I'm saying all of this because I've
"fixed" too many computers for too many
people who knew too little about how things
really are out here on the internet.

Now I'm off to register to see this
awesome video:S

I hope this info helps someone.

For all you who know better
than me; bring it on! ;)

I was playing on BBS's when a 14400 modem was thought impossible ;)

Registration on sites like Skydivingmovies is great because if an account is being abused (given on another Board and they are ripping the bandwidth with it) its really easy to disable the account and then block the access to anyone being refered from that site. It also makes it easy to go back to the site op and ask them to remove the links from their site.

Yeah.... I had to walk uphill, barefoot, in the snow.....

To use my old Sinclair

But it was worth it

And then I had to walk uphill home too

The average script kid who screws around with sites like this is turned away when asked to register. It's simple, effective, and it takes 2 minutes.

You weren't attacked, man. You were called out. There's a difference.
