BORED? F%&K With Windows!

You know the boring startup screens etc you get when you boot your win 95/98 machines? Ya know the ones that keep reminding you that you have Windows?
Change them!
First open your C directory, if you havent already set your computer to display all files, click view>folder options, and under the view tab check "show all files".
then open up mspaint, click file > open, look in C for Logo.sys
NOT Io.sys
Logo.sys is that boring ass startup graphic disguised as a system file, open it in mspaint
Edit it however you like! dont change the size tho, when your done, just click the "x" to close paint and say yes to save changes to Logo.sys
volia! your new and improved startup screen!

make a copy of the old one in another folder if ya want first, but it doesnt matter since there is another hidden one there that will display if the Logo.sys file isnt present , compliments of microsoft.

I' attaching a jpg file I use for mine if anyone wants to use it, click attachments above my pic on the left. to use this one though you'll have to paste it in place of the original image when you open Logo.sys in Mspant, and it loses a little color quality but I still like it enjoy!

Windows always looks the same. If you work with Windows, there's plenty
of things (read: annoyances) that remind you that you have Windows.

Um... better not, indeed. If you manage to screw this file up, your machine
won't boot anymore.

In fact, you can even replace it with another file if you want.
All that matters is the size. Dunno what happens if you try a different size,
but it probably won't be catastrophic.
Why don't you try Linux or FreeBSD for a change?
Windows is the Manta under the operating systems!

I thik if you muck it up or have a complete different file called Logo.sys itll just not display anything and show you all the cool stuff you see whn you press escape at the startup screen.
just cause we use windblows doesmt mean we cant mangle-err, explore it!

Except for the color scheme, icons and background there's not a hell of
a lot you can change about your windows desktop.
Transparent windows? Gradients on your window border? Custum shapes
for your window borders? Dockapps? Virtual desktops? Animated
backgrounds? Getting rid of that hideous start button (to shut down you
click Start... ah such wonderful logic)? Different border colors for
different applications? No chance, buddy.
Looking at a desktop, one can always tell if it's Windows.
Windows is rigid as hell.

Now once MS finishes stealing stuff from Aqua (OS X) I think the world may be a better place..

Actually a few years back I worked on a project called litestep and we achieved everything you suggest in Win9x. Not sure if it's still around or not as I left to work on linux-ware full time, but it was open source'd so I'd be surprised if it's not around in some form or another.
But I would agree, the only reason I run it now is as my Win-tendo..

Ah, the AfterStep/LiteStep/Step thingy.
Granted, that works. Too bad though, that a bunch of volunteers had to
do something that a large and wealthy institution like Microsoft should
have done themselves.
And it's unfortunate that the masses never seemed to discover it.
