IHazySky 0 #1 February 7, 2014 Have an old XRS. Want to throw magnets in the riser covers cause I accidentally ordered too many when I was buying them for PC handle modifications... How should I retrofit these riser covers? Looking for opinions to aid my design...
GLIDEANGLE 1 #2 February 7, 2014 Since those riser covers likely ALSO cover the reserve risers, if they fail to release properly they could affect reserve deployment and performance. Therefore, this sounds like a reserve container ALTERATION to me. That brings those pesky FAR sections into play: 14 CFR 65.125 and 14 CFR 65.129(d). Good Luck! The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!

JerryBaumchen 1,076 #5 February 8, 2014 Hi GLIDE, Quote reserve container ALTERATION There is no mfr that I know of that includes the riser covers as a part of their reserve container. This does not mean someone like VSE that has the 'extra' riser covers as part of the reserve container. It all comes down to what was submitted to the FAA. Now, I suppose someone will tell me about some mfr that actually included the riser covers into what they submitted. JerryBaumchen
riggerrob 561 #6 February 10, 2014 Like Sandy Reid says: "If you don't understand something, copy it exactly." IOW sew your magnets in the same way the Javelin factory sews them.
skydiverek 60 #7 February 10, 2014 Javelin has magnetic riser covers now? I know I saw such Javelin about four years ago, but never again. These were normal tucktabs (folded 180 degrees into their pockets) with magnets. I wonder what the release force was...
IHazySky 0 #8 February 25, 2014 What about Velcro to tuck-tab conversions that were occurring in years past? Were these modifications violating the TSO of the container?
riggerrob 561 #9 February 25, 2014 Velcro works great, primarily because it tolerates large variations in manufacturing. The disadvantage with Velcro is that it wears out after a few hundred jumps. Magnets enjoy - almost as - sloppy manufacturing tolerances, with much longer service life. We have not yet heard of magnets wearing out ... er we are too early in the life-cycle of magnets to understand their limitations/wear patterns/malfunction modes, etc..
