Plane takes off on Antarctic rescue

Notable excerpt:

"The rescue plane is a Twin Otter, a rugged twin-engine plane designed for rough weather, and capable of landing on small landing strips."

Yup....;).. Twin Otter....just read about the rescue in Monday morning's newspaper.... Otters are used,, inpart because they have NO hydraulics to the control surfaces..... It's all cables,,,, so there is nothing to freeze, no fluid to congeal,,,,, and Plus..... we all know Otter Piots,,,,,, are FEARLESS>>>>.[:/]:o:SB|;)
. I wonder if the "rescued" get extra altitude,, if they flash the pilots..???? :o:)....
Only problem is ,,, coming out of Antarctica,,,, It's ALL UPHILL !!!!...

Otters have hydraulics both to the nosewheel, the tail rudder, the brakes, and the flaps at least. I suspect other compenets like the horizontal stab and ailerons are entirely controlled by hydraulics, too.

You'll notice this on Otters with problems with the hydraulic system, the pilot be pumping furiously on a manual backup hydraulic pump...
