I'm shocked

Recommended Posts

First of all I want to tell you that I'm an air traffic controller...
I think that everybody here knows about the collision between the russian TU154 and cargo Boeing 757 over Germany in 2002. I watched closely the reports because you have to learn form mistakes. There were so many things that were wrong that night... that man was alone to controll two different things: an approach sector and an area control sector, the collision alarms were off (and he didn't know about that), the comunication with the other sectors didn't work, the planes didn't respond. The result: people died, ... children died. The controller was sent to psychiatric care. The lawsuit begun. And now he was KILLED.
I'm shocked.

Swiss Air Crash Controller Stabbed To Death
February 24, 2004

An assailant stabbed to death the air traffic controller who was on duty when two planes collided over southern Germany in July 2002, killing 71 people, Swiss police said on Tuesday.

The 36-year old Danish national, whose name was unavailable, was employed by Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control in charge of monitoring parts of Germany's airspace just across the border from Switzerland.

A spokesman for Skyguide said the man had been in charge of monitoring air traffic in the region around Lake Constance when the two planes -- a Tupolev TU154 operated by Bashkirian Airlines and a Boeing 757 cargo plane operated by DHL -- collided in mid-air.

The victims were mostly Russian children. Zurich police said in a statement an unknown man had called on the air traffic controller at his home outside Zurich and, after a short verbal exchange, stabbed him to death.

A spokesman said it was "totally open" whether the crime was in any way related to the air disaster. He said police were still looking for the assailant, described as a dark-haired man in his early 50s who was speaking "broken German".

Skyguide has been criticized for its role in the air accident after investigators revealed that only one controller was on duty when it happened, while his partner was on a break.

Investigators also said the agency's collision alert system was out of action for maintenance, and work on its telephone system meant a warning call from German colleagues never got through.

In a statement released just days after the accident, the air traffic controller had acknowledged that errors in the traffic control network contributed to the disaster.

It was a problem with that too... The controller told the russian plane to descend... But the rule is to do what the TCAS says. And they didn't report the TCAS alert.

We have a similar situation that's bad out in Denver. They built runway 16L and R too close together for simultanious ILSs. But they do visuals and if you are side by side you are going to get RAs. I called the tower and complained and they said they get that 30-40 times a day when conducting those ops. Like WTF?!! This is now training pilots to again ignore TCAS warnings. Me and a A320 were fighting for glideslope awhile back. Both wondering if we should continue. His telling him to climb and mine telling me to descend.....near the ground!!!

Very sad, but nothing shocks me anymore. I have lost the ability to be shocked :( That's pretty sad too.

To put your life in danger from time to time ... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities.

hole DK is in chok about it. it seems like he(the controller)did want to take what ever punishment he got from the courht, but as investigation begun it showed it wasnt his fault of it all,but he were the comander and the one that had the responsibility for this NOT to happen.
Sadly it looks like a Russian father of 2 kids and a wife on one of the planes(i can only feel for this guy,i would probaly try to do the same, but it dont make it right),he found the controlers adress, and stabbed him in front of his wife...

Its a sad world,i feel sorry for both the Russian guy and the Danish controler[:/]

Stay safe
