ntrprnr 0 #1 August 16, 2006 Was running the central park loop today instead of murdering someone (relatively good trade-off, more or less) and a song came on my iPod that I haven't heard in eons. It's from an off-broadway show called Closer Than Ever. Show ran from 89 to 90, and is still one of my top five Broadway/Off Broadway shows. Anyhow, was listening to the words today and realized that the entire last lyric in the last song of Act 1 could be about Skydiving. Totally made me think of my first jump yet again, and why I continue to love this sport. The show is about 4 people reaching middle-age-dom and realizing what they've done and haven't done with their lives. It's quite good, and it takes a lot to make me rave about musical theatre, if only because most of what comes out nowadays is total shite. Either way... The lyrics to the last verse of the song "Next Time/Wouldn't Go Back," from the Original Soundtrack to Closer than Ever. Music and Lyrics by Maltby and Shire: WELL, WHA'D'YA KNOW? WELL, WHA'D'YA KNOW? THE UNIVERSE SHAKES THE FIRMAMENT SPINS THE GROUND IS ABOVE THE SKY IS BELOW I'M FEELING THE BARRIERS CRUMBLE AND FALL I'M NOT EVEN SURE WHERE I'M HEADING AT ALL I'M MOVING AHEAD AND I'M GAINING A PACE AND I'M FLYING THROUGH TIME AND I'M OUT INTO SPACE IF SOMEONE TOLD ME EVEN JUST A WEEK AGO THAT I WOULD FEEL THE WAY I FEEL RIGHT NOW I WOULD HAVE SAID "IMPOSSIBLE, NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!" MEN BUT HERE I AM AMAZED TO FIND I'VE TURNED MY BACK ON ALL I WAS BEFORE ALL AND CLOSED THE DOOR AND I WOULDN'T GO BACK, I WOULDN'T GO BACK FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL I KNOW I COULDN'T GO BACK I'LL NEVER GO BACK, EVER GO BACK NOT TO WHERE I WAS BEFORE._______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" NWFlyer 2 #2 August 16, 2006 Well, at least you included "listens to show tunes" on the list of reasons why people mistake you for being gay. Scoop 0 #6 August 16, 2006 How about 'Melting Point OF Wax' by Thrice (H) Im sure andy will agree with me THRICE LYRICS "The Melting Point Of Wax" I've waited for this moment All my life and more And now I see so clearly What I could not see before. The time is now or never This chance won't come again Throw caution and myself into the wind. There's no promise of safety with these secondhand wings But I'm willing to find out what impossible means. A leap of faith. Parody of an angel Miles above the sea I hear the voice of reason Screaming after me "You've flown far too high boy now you're too close to the sun, Soon your makeshift wings will come undone" But how will I know limits from lies if I never try? There's no promise of safety with these secondhand wings But I'm willing to find out what impossible means. I'll climb through the heavens on feathers and dreams 'Cause the melting point of wax means nothing to me. Nothing to me Nothing to me I will touch the sun or I will die trying. Die Trying. Fly on these secondhand wings Willing to find out what impossible means I'll climb through the heavens on feathers and dreams 'Cause the melting point of wax means nothing to me Nothing to me Means nothing to me Miles above the sea. kiittycatt 0 #7 August 16, 2006 This one always makes me think of skydiving... The Wallflowers 'When you're on Top' I feel fine With the sun in my eyes The wind in my hair When I’m falling out of this sky I’m doing better than I thought I would But nothing’s ever as good As when you’re on top I want to wake up And just start running Into a ditch Or straight up a mountain I want to get Where no one been gettin’ Make it deeper than hell Or make it higher than heaven ... Just didn’t know The sky was this shallow 'Celebrate we will, cause life is short but sweet for certain'
Icon134 0 #8 August 16, 2006 there are several that make me think of skydiving... many because I've used them in skydiving vids... this here's one of my favorites: "When You Come Back Down" by Nickel Creek You got to leave me now, you got to go alone You got to chase a dream, one that's all your own Before it slips away When you're flyin' high, take my heart along I'll be the harmony to every lonely song That you learn to play When you're soarin' through the air I'll be your solid ground Take every chance you dare I'll still be there When you come back down When you come back down I'll keep lookin' up, awaitin' your return My greatest fear will be that you will crash and burn And I won't feel your fire I'll be the other hand that always holds the line Connectin' in between your sweet heart and mine I'm strung out on that wire And I'll be on the other end, To hear you when you call Angel, you were born to fly, If you get too high I'll catch you when you fall I'll catch you when you fall [Bridge:] Your memory's the sunshine every new day brings I know the sky is calling Angel, let me help you with your wings When you're soarin' through the air I'll be your solid ground Take every chance you dare I'll still be there When you come back down Take every chance you dare, I'll still be there When you come back down When you come back downLivin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... ntrprnr 0 #10 August 17, 2006 QuoteYou listen to show tunes while running??? I dare you to download "Defying Gravity" from the soundtrack to "Wicked," or "Pity the Child" from the soundtrack of "Chess," run to it, and not speed up. It's all about the kind of music that works - for some, it's death metal. For me, it's Broadway - as well as Kid Rock, and about 75 other artists, from pop to jazz to techno to metal. And yes, I know you were just giving me shit, just thought I'd put the dare out there anyway. _______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" "Even in freefall, I have commitment issues."
