headoverheels 329 #1 September 25, 2006 Here is a shot from my neighborhood yesterday. This photo is not made by me. My house is to the right and slightly higher, out of frame. I first smelled the fire while inside. It was about half a mile from my house at the time, and not really that much smoke. Lots of sirens and equipment arriving. It looked better for a couple of minutes, then got much worse. The fire rounded the side of the hill, fanned by a bit of wind, flames about 8 feet high. I got on the roof and started wetting down my shakes. The fire-retardant bombers arrived, and were a thrilling sight. You can't see it so much from the photo perspective, but their approach was pretty steep, coming downhill on their drop passes. Very skilled piloting, and very effective. Without the bombers, I'm pretty sure the fire would have overrun some houses and topped out the hills. Edit: The orange stuff on the right is retardant. The fire was pretty much under control by the time of the photo.
