Is this reasonable?

Recommended Posts

Start a new job in 2 weeks and I'm drooling thinking about buying a canopy. According to the PIA chart a Hornet 190 packs as small as a Sabre 150. Would it be reasonable to have a dacron lined Hornet 190 in a J3 which is made for a 170 but routinely fits a sabre 190? I know about individual canopy volume variations yadda yadda... Just looking for rough idea? Is this PIA chart reasonably accurate?

When I was jumping a J3, had the following canopies fitting nicely.

Stiletto 150, Triathlon 190, and Sabre 210.

Granted that the Sabre was pretty tight, and the Stiletto pretty loose.

Based on that, a I would think a Hornet 190 would be well within the acceptable range.

I personally don't put too much trust in the PIA chart. I would imagine that a Hornet 190 packs pretty much like a Sabre2 190, except when new - the Sabre2 will pack a bit bigger when new, but only for the first 50 packjobs, or so.

Javelins are great because the placing of the closing loop at the back allows for a wide range of canopy sizes - you just have to size the closing loop appropriately.

I've had a Hornet 170, Pilot 150 (borrowed), Safire2 149 (demo), and Hornet 150 in my container that was made for a 150. Of the 3 150 sized canopies (varying ages, etc.), the Pilot packed the largest, Safire 2 packed the smallest, and the Hornet was somewhere in between.

The key word here is "Dacron." Canopies with dacron lines will have a larger pack volume than canopies with microlines.

You might be able to do it, but you will not enjoy closing the container and you will be putting unneeded stress on the main side flaps and grommets.
