Hang gliding in Rio de Janeiro

Recommended Posts

ok... this morning I got a link to a video that was taking in Rio de janeiro (Pedra da Gavea) where the instructor abandoned the paragliding by activating his parachute and leaving the american student by himself.
I still don't know what happened with the student, but this is a pretty f*ed up video.

is that OK for me to post it here?!

The caption text is in Portugese (Brazil?) and it states that the video
was taken by Luiza Reis and that it was a Hang Glidng tandem flight; the pilot
failed to clip in and held on from the control bar for a while, then he
deployed his parachute abandoning his American passenger.

It didn't do the passenger any favors.... but they were baked anyway
as it was after the pro forgets to hook in.... and the passenger doesn't
have a reserve chute to try.... not that they would have been able to
deploy it.... no report on the outcome....

PUTZ!! Que sujeira!
I did a paraglide from that ramp last year. All the tandem masters seemed to have it together safety wise...but ya never know....I am surprised to see him using a round canopy....no control there either....

Let us know the outcome for the poor participant when you hear....

Sounded from the conversation like the instructor was OK. From a newspaper article I found, the tourist landed in a tree, and other than scrapes and bruises was OK.

I did a flight there a few years ago as well, along with my son.

That's pretty fucked up.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
