schuey87 0 #1 October 4, 2005 What should I look for when buying an altimeter 2nd hand? Should I really get a new one for piece of mind? I'm looking at an Altimaster 3 made in 97 with close to 500 jumps... I'm thinking it would be OK, I just wanted to check if there is anything I should know that might mean I'll have to replace it soon or whatever.... cheers guys. gemini 0 #3 October 5, 2005 Or call Alti and ask them where they will be with their pressure test next. Then go to that boogie, get it tested, make a few jumps, and make lots of new friends! Blue skies, Jim
EvilLurker 2 #4 October 5, 2005 Or you could ask a friend to take it to altitude and cross-check it with their altimeter. It's nice to know that it doesn't "stick", I had one like that for one jump.
377 21 #5 October 6, 2005 a crude but effective test for basic functionaity is to get a zip lock freezer bag, put the altimeter in, blow some air into the bag, seal it, squeeze it. The pressurization should make the altimeter go below zero. Better yet put two in and compare readings. If the alimeter is totally busted (aneroid puntured) pressurizing it will not make the needle move.2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
