lawrocket 3 #2 January 11, 2011 This is great. Checkign out the "Liftoff" section, there's some more story. At 5:32 Lovell radioed "Inboard" as the inboard motor on stage 2 shut down unexpectedly two minutes early. The shutdown was unexplained at the time and thought to be an electrical issue. It was later determined to be a pogo oscillation. The pogo oscillation was a problem that NASA knew about. It's where the fuel flow is uneven as a result of a vibration and gets more and more uneven so that the launch is like a pogo stick - and it gets worse and worse. NASA had a fix that wasn't ready until Apollo 14. The Apollo 13 pogos were determined to be 68g on the engines! Because of a malfunction in a low thrust sensor, the engine shut down. Analysis revealed that had that inboard engine not shut down, the stage 2 motors would have been pounded loose from their mounts and into to fuel tank. KABOOM! My wife is hotter than your wife. murrays 0 #3 January 11, 2011 It really is incredible to read this. Thanks to the OP for posting.
