San Diego Boy in Davis

Recommended Posts

Howdy, my name is Greg. My first experience under a canopy happened in 1969 at age 11 when a few of the jumpers at Lakeside dropzone in the San Diego area gave me a ride in their homemade parasail (my profile picture). I was attached to a car by a rope as the car drove down the dirt runway. The guys told me I went to an altitude of about 75 feet. I was totally thrilled of course, but they made me take a solemn oath that I would never breathe a word about it to my mother!

My Dad, Don, was the President of the San Diego Skydivers during the late 1960's, and I always looked forward to being out there with him, my brothers, and the other jumpers every weekend until my Dad stopped jumping in the early 1970's. My Dad passed away just a few months ago, and that event got me thinking about a few big questions, not the least of which was "How is it possible that I never became a skydiver??" So on March 1st at age 49 I began the AFF program at Skydance Skydiving in Davis, and now I have 68 jumps and I feel I am living out a childhood dream!

I love it here at my home dropzone in Davis – excellent facilities and the people are great! I also got the chance to make over 20 jumps with my brother (300+ jumps) down at Skydive San Diego a few weeks back. They have a very beautiful dropzone with lots of great people also. My brother is popping at the seams with pride (and so am I) over the fact that his twin daughters are now jumping as third-generation San Diego Skydivers! We are looking forward to a family 4-way sometime soon after they get their A licenses!

I am a high school math and photo teacher. Toward the end of the day this Friday, six of my students will be making tandem jumps. I will be on the same load jumping out ahead of them. If I am just dreaming all of this, please don't wake me up!!

Ok, this is getting pretty long now – I am just so danged happy that I am having a hard time containing myself. I am really looking forward to reading and being a part of the great forums here!

Welcome to DZ.com and the NorCal skydiving community! Davis is a great DZ; maybe we'll run into each other some time.
