I scheduled a anniversary tandem "gift" for my husband, I wasn't planning on going myself but at the last minute decided to reserve a tandem ride, too. You know, something we could do together - well sort of. Husband thought tandem was O.K. I thought it was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. The rush of free fall followed by the pristine silence after the canopy opens - it was a new world. I have no words to describe what it felt like to fly and believe me I have a lot of words. I just knew I wanted to learn how to jump myself. Did my research and joined USPA, read the SIM, The Skydiver's Handbook and Jump. Visited a few drop zones and found one that has a wonderful staff, casual atmosphere, teaches S/L and they don't seem to mind when I ask a lot of newbie questions. I work this weekend but weather permitting I'll do my last PRCP and first free fall Sunday. Yep, I'm a little nervous, a little scared, a little excited but it's all good.

This is a long standing relationship. We've been married for 21 years and together for 26 years (We lived together for 5 years) and he was ok when I got my tattoo and my belly ring (Yeah - He's a keeper) so I think he'll be ok with this too. When we talked about getting licensed as skydivers he said he just wasn't interested but if I wanted to do it I should go ahead. So I am. But I did get a lecture about leaving for the drop zone and not taking my cell and not leaving him a phone number and he was right I should have done both of those things. When I went back out on Sunday I remembered to take my cell with me, left him plenty of contact information for the dz and an approximate time I expected to get back. Things were fine when I got home.

Did my first Tandem with my husband as well. That spring I took up AFF and he took up golf. He still listens to my stories. We are seperated now, (not because of skydiving, but he still wants the contact info he has the kids while I am jumping. I always have to check in with my kids at the end of a day of jumping so they know I am OK. Good Luck

I doodle little stick men on script pads with arrows of wind flow around their various appendages - change their position and try to guess the change in wind flow - Honestly, my friends will not talk to me about sky diving any more.

Since my Tandem I've never spent an entire day without thinking about skydiving, at least once. I think I got it bad.

Thanks - I wish I could get to the point where it was all just natural - where I didn't have to think so much - about everything - all the time.

With only 4 jumps I have a lot to learn. I'm just hoping I don't drive my instructors and the people at the DZ nuts with all my newbie questions.

I can definitally ID with not being able to stop thinking about jumping, and now since untill further notice I can't go on vacation it is even worse. I bet I know the reasion you can't sleep at night. It is probibly the same reasion why I can't sleep at night

Sorry to hear about the separation - I hope that all goes well for you and your family. It was hard on my sister when she separated and then divorced, but she swears it was the best decision she ever made.

Since you have been jumping a lot longer than I have (well, ok, everybody has been jumping a lot longer than I have ) could you tell me does the feeling of wanting to dive again and again ever go away? I can't imagine it ever getting boring or "routine." Can you ever have two sky dives that are the same - I don't see how but I don't know? Blue skies

Thanks for the sorry but we will be fine. To answer second question. For me the wanting to jump hasn't changed at all. As a matter of fact this weekend I couldn't jump when it was going to be like 60degrees so off I went to the DZ in 46degress low cloyds. Got one Hop and Pop and two full altitudes. Walked through a bit of mus back to hanger couldn't have been happier.

I asked about 'boredom' because of a discussion I had with my father-in-law. He trained at Chanute Airforce Base. I, thinking this might be a topic we could chat about, happily launched into how much I'm loving sky diving.
That was a big mistake - I was read the riot act and told it was a crazy and stupid thing to do, he was sure I would get bored because once you've jumped all jumps are the same, etc.
I was really surprised at his reaction. He's usually a good resource, level headed, reasonable, etc. I would have talked with him further but I obviously touched a nerve. So I shut up. I just didn't want to upset him any more.
IMHO - Sky dives are like snowflakes or people - no two are the same. I've yet to be "bored" I learn alot from my jumps - granted I only have a few.
Lesson learned: Don't assume an air force background means they enjoy/enjoyed sky diving.

The simplest probable explanation is that he didn't like it. But
something else - as I understand it, most US military jump training is
static line from maybe 1000 feet or so. Not a whole lot of time to do
different body positions, or just enjoy the view - or to get under your
reserve, for that matter. Or maybe one of his buddies got hurt jumping.
Not that it makes a lot of difference, but it might explain the reaction.

I did not know that - that's great!!!! Thank you so much, now I know when to schedule my vacation time. Have you been through the museum? I thought it was great, especially the mock up of enlisted quarters. The old pictures were wonderful, too.
