Hello everyone, I am coming out of the closet

Recommended Posts

I have been secretly reading posts on this sight for sometime (about 3 months) and I decided to make my presence known yesterday. So here I am and as I gain knowledge in this sport I hope I may impart some to my fellow skydivers here.
It is great to be part of a wonderful group of people who are not afraid to live.
Paul Anthony

Maybe my friend Henry will eventually start posting with us instead of just reading. He just finished his AFF course last week.

PS THis what I have learned thus far. Hope I a did not ramble to much below.
It is a good Idea to put a stitch through the chinstrap of new bonehead helmets as they tend to loosen when you stuff the excess under the chinstrap cushion. (this cost me a new helmet and protrack. Ouch)

Always stow your riser unless you have bumpers.

Hook turns under 2000 feet for newbies with less than 500 jumps - bad idea. Just read the incident reports for the last few years I believe it is over 40% of them.

Also no AAD is a bad idea. Possibly could have saved another 15-20%

It is amazing how much the way your rig fits affects the way you fly under canopy. Certain brands fit different body types so you may want to try a few. It turns out for me the one that fits the best seems to be the infinity which is a heck of a lot cheaper than the odyssey I was convinced I should buy but never fir right causing a slight turn under canopy as one leg strap would always shift in free fall no matter how tight I made them.

If you see others opening there chutes in free fall and you are new you should probably pull.

If you are new do not hesitate to start gearing up at least five minutes before everyone else. It never hurts to be extra safe and you never know when they may cut your call time a little short. Running to the airplane when new is never a good idea.

As you are tracking away very near to pull time it never hurts to do a quick barrel roll to make sure no one is above you and then follow it with a wave off. Of course practice this at higher altitudes until proficient.

Learn all you can and realize there is always more to learn. Talk to the riggers and get more than one riggers opinion. Every time you see a pro or the dz guru ask 1 question. I know you have thousands. They are usually happy to be asked there opinion.
Stay current.

And most of all relax, have fun, and enjoy the ride.
You will always be safer from a relaxed place than one of fear and that does not mean to be oblivious it just means relax slow down and have a plan that you can achieve at a nice paced rate.

Paul,
WELCOME (officially now). You forgot too...
Keep those posts shorter & quicker if you plan to more efficiently work on that all-coveted enthusiast "rating"! ;)

I think I may have only maybe 10-12 or so more to go, ---Woohoo mamma, I'm soon going to actually be a somebody! :S

Paul,

You've demonstrated the ability to learn. Good way for a skydiver to be. Doesn't matter if you've got 54 skydives or thousands, you can always learn something new. Welcome to skydiving and to the forums. Hope to see more of your wisdom as your skydiving career progresses.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I was not sure who to hit reply to; or will all of you get this message.
I will definitely be at Perris for Memorial day and thank you for the invite.
Skymama I have read your posts many time and thanks for all your contributions to this sight. I was hoping to say hi for the "all you can jump" weekend but I heard you were sick.
So definitley we will meet and greet Memorial day.

Steve,
I love you magenta canopy. They sure look beautiful against a blue sky :)
Thanks for the welcome Crazy Ivan. May the force be with us all.
Beavdog, I think you are wondering if this was my first post because it would mean I owe you a beer. Well it was my third but I will gladly by you one anyway.
Flygirl, glad I am not the only new one here :)
May no one forget to pull.
Scrumpot, I am glad to see you getting close to you goal of being off newbie status. I will get there someday. In my mind you already are somebody. And be careful you do not go overboard and become and old hand and if you do don't worry it just means you can be a pooh-bah soon. (i think)
Nightjumps, thanks for the encouragement...
Katiebear thanks for the compliment.

I think you're confusing me with Skybytch. I live in FL, and she's the one who calls Perris home and had a little problem at Taco Hell that weekend. I can't come to the Memorial Day boogie, but I'll be at the American Boogie in June at Davis, CA if you can make it.

because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

Oh I think you are right. I have been mixing you two up. Did you do a jump out of a helicopter that is on video? I think I saw it.

I will keep my ears open for info about the June Boogie at Davis.
I am buying a container right now and cannot decide between the infinity and the javelin. THe infinity fits me really well but the javelin has a great reputation. I hear it is a five month wait for a Javelin though.
Too bad you will miss memorial day. Last weekend was a blast even with so so weather. You cannot beat $12 jumps
I am sure we will meet somewhere.
Especially if I get my rig ion time for that boogie.

No worries about confusing me with Skybytch, she rocks and I'm flattered! :)
Yes, my first helicopter jump is on the site. I highly recommend doing that if you get the chance, it's awesome!

Don't discount the Infinity in your container choice, it has a great reputation too. I had one for my first rig and had no problems with it at all. You can always get a Javelin later as you downsize more.

Hello all,
Now that I've been totally outed by Paul I'll move out of lurking status. According to the "rules" I should be very popular by now with all the un-registered reading I've done. B| This is Henry and I recently completed my AFF at Perris. WOOOHOOO!!...(Don't worry Stu, Shelly, Ki, Eric, Raoul, Patrick, Uli and the rest of you guys...the beer is coming). This weekend is my first solo (weather permitting) and hope to get at least four jumps in. Very Psyched! If anyone is out there this weekend and sees a tall blonde guy with a very excited yet focused, mixed with a little bewildered look on his face, come over and say hi.(I'll probably ask you for a gear check.)
Not only is this an awesome sport but what an awesome community I am joining. Looking forward to meeting many of you in person as my skydiving career progresses. In the mean time I'll read a lot, contribute what I can, and enjoy the flight.

Henry

Look Henry has joined us alas.
As for a helicopter jump it sounds great. That or a hot air balloon. HAve you done both?
I loved your video by the way. THanks for sharing.

Do you know any serious freeflyers who use infinity containers. I just wonered if they have any known issues like riser covers opening in freefly.
Thanks for everything

Glad I could help you come out of the closet Henry. Sorry for doing it publicly but sooner or later they would have found out you were there.
Congrats again on finishing AFF. I look forward to an airplane ride with you this weekend. Just think 12 more jumps and we can jump together. Woohooo.
By the way I think the rule is whenever you have any first in skydiving you have to by a beer and it seems you may owe us all a beer for posting here first. :)
I am glad you are here and a part of this incredible sport
See you tomorrow at 7am??

Based on what I'm seeing out of you, I think you may just beat me my friend!:o

Oh well, it's not like 9/10'ths of this entire forum haven't done that ALREADY. ...Heck, I've been "around" here really for about 6 yrs!
Before it was even Dropzone.com ...actually about I think 8 yrs ago or so Sangiro started with simply a download "BBS" (bulletin board system), then "Sangiro's Synergy" was the spot to DL things like Win 3.1 configuration files to make your windows icon's look parachute-related.

But alas, here I sit, still just a "NEWBIE"!;)
Thanks for caring/checking up on me though!
I'm sure that SOMEDAY I'll become at least an "enthusiast".:S

Hey, and what a coincidence... in just 12 more POSTS, I can be considered maybe a "somebody" too!:P

'Course I only got >700 jumps & been around almost 8 yrs +/-...

Like you say: Woohooo! ;)

Yup, Them's were the days! ...I used to dial up with my accoustic coupler, and even then Sangiro had the "hottest" stuff out there.

A C:\ prompt that would have a little jumper fall from it from the top left of the screen I think it was....

Nope, but doing a balloon jump is high on my list.

I don't know a lot of people who jump Infinity containers, but I think that's because I live in the land of Mirage, Racer, Vector and Javelin. But, from my experience, the riser covers tucked in very nicely, and I even had a couple packers comment on that fact. Do a search in the Gear forum, and you might find some more opinions.
