Swooping is Not a Crime
BrianSGermain replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Hey All, Here is a new thread to continue the discussion regarding the subject of the article: "Swooping is Not a Crime". Full article here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/safety/detail_page.cgi?ID=664 Let's keep creating solutions together! What does "right hand pattern" mean to swoopers?
BrianSGermain replied to 78RATS's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Of course. Making "Right Traffic" is defined by right turns in the pattern. Turning to final with a 270 left or a 90 right is the same thing, as the final heading is the same. BSR proposal for canopy patterns
BrianSGermain replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
True, but really vague and touchy feely. What's your position on a BSR that encourages DZs use a method to "separate by time and location" (I find BSRs to be 'recommendations' rather than 'requirements' in real practice). Can you clarify what you are talking about? whether you think that 1 - a BSR of this kind is a good idea vs 2 - whether you think a BSR of this kind is a 'step backward due to fear'. I believe that this is not a reason for another BSR. I think we have plenty of rules already. I think that specifics are going to be difficult to enforce, especially since there are such a variety of landing areas out there. We need to take each situation on a case-by-case basis, and use our heads. Rules can be used to avoid thinking. That is not what we are about. Lets just increase our level of awareness and do what makes sense. Here's my plan: 1) Have two separate landing zones for box pattern and high speed approaches. 2) Do our best to create separation in time and altitude by staggering opening altitudes and by talking to each other about our plan in the loading area. 3) Create vertical separation under canopy before getting to pattern altitude. 4) Have someone in the landing area filming every landing so we can learn from our mistakes, as well as our successes. BSR proposal for canopy patterns
BrianSGermain replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If we limit what skydivers can do beyond what is reasonable, we will effectively kill the sport. It is a step backward due to fear, rather than a step forward toward solutions. Separation by time and location, yes. Banning the human spirit, No! Just my thoughts... + Instructional Videos:www.AdventureWisdom.com Keynote Speaking:www.TranscendingFEAR.com Canopies and Courses:www.BIGAIRSPORTZ.com -

The course will be modified to suit the needs of the participants. If there are a few people that want me to cover the high performance stuff, we will do that. Regardless, I will film landings and debrief you whatever your approach method is. So, I urge you to come and be a part of the experience! You will usually need to start higher if you are coming out of deep brakes. This is because 1) The parachute requires time to recover from the surge (forward surge from the relief of brakes). 2) The surge itself will lose altitiude. 3) The front riser pressure will be lighter at the initiation of the dive when you are coming out of brakes, so you will get to a lower angle of attack in a shorter period of time. 4) There is a slight delay in our action from letting off the brakes to applying the front risers, and that time requires altitude. How much higher is a variable based on several variables. Experiment at EXACTLY 3000 feet on several jumps. Do the full flight into dive three times as well as brakes into dive three times. That should give you a reasonable idea of how much altitide you need to allow for. Be sure to use a digital altimeter that is a current and reliable design. Happy Flying! This particular course will be targeted at a mid-level audience, but if it looks as if the group wants me to talk about advanced stuff then that is what we will do. I am totally adaptable. BG PS, we can create courses for first jumpers, intermediates or advanced groups for future dates.
