As you stated the friction of the lines and the bigger bites on the stoes, are not that much of a factor.

I don't think Dacron slowes openings as much as it "cushions" them. Dacron streches alot compared to Spectra, or other microlines, and absorbs some of the opening shock.

Plus, Dacron has more friction, so the slider descends little bit slower on these lines. This, combined with the lighter weight of brass slider grommets (instead of heavier stainless steel which can build more mommentum on their way down) may produce slightly slower/softer openings.

I have heard about a (i believe) monkey fist. Smaller than a hackey but doesnt squeeze down when grabbed.

Plus it is less slippery because of its texture.

Question: why are monkey fists smaller that hackeys??? :|

Yes, it's just a lanyard. I think the RWS website will even show you how to make one.

It's just that I have not heard of any solo jumper using it since it was invented in 1998 or so... I was wondering why it is critical to use it with SkyHook, but not with standard RSL... :S

We have required the "Collins' Lanyard" (which automatically cuts away the other side if the RSL side riser goes first for any reason) on our tandem rigs for over three years now, because a single riser release is much more likely on a tandem rig. However, they can also happen on a solo rig.

Has it ever been offered on solo rigs??? If not, why? Just curious.

  5. Mr. Booth:

Thank you very much for explaining this particular design. Now I see how it can be better than on other rigs. By the way, it would be probably a great idea to publish an explenation of Vector 3 features on RWS website. Some of them seemed like a worse design (meshless reserve pilotchute or the aforementioned reserve flap) until it was thoroughly explained to me. I think more skydivers are "misled" in this way (and buy a different rig :)

  6. I was wondering - why doesn't Vector 3's reserve flap tuck in on the bottom. Well, I know it does, but it folds first. It loks like it could be snagged be the line in case of canopy collision :|. New Javelin, Wings, Voodoo have a reserve flap that cannot be snagged (the ending tucks in straight down, without folding upwards).

I know RWS always wants to make their product safest, so maybe there is some reason for this particular style of reserve flap? :S

    Any ideas?

I want to know too. I find myself actually hoping someone with a Skyhook equipped Vector will actually have a malfunction. So far no one has reported one to me, which is funny, because about 25% of the rigs we are shipping have Skyhooks.

    Mr. Booth:

Will we be able to see any videos of SkyHook in action on www.relativeworkshop.com? That would be great, especially cuting away from spinning malfunction!

    :)

  8. Why so few Tandem Masters install the second drouge release so that it is accesible to the passenger (like on passenger's harness/shoulder)?. It seems to me that it would be more accessible to Tandem Master, and also make a tandem jump safer - I read about two "passenger saves", where a passenger pulled the drouge release and this action saved the pair's life.

I think that some TM do not want to give anything to passengers, but in this case, even if the passenger pulls the drouge release too early (panicking, for instance) it will only change the drouge into throw out PC, or make for a high opening, so it does not seem to make the situation more dangerous.

    Any comments???

A sand filled hackey would be way too heavy. When I put the first hackey sack handle on a pilot chute years ago, I used a standard hackey fill with dried seeds or beans. I was much lighter than one filled with sand would be, yet still much too heavy. It didn't want to stay in the pouch, and it tended to fall down below the canopy on opening and tangle with the lines. We had to learn to make our own hackeys and fill them with cotton. I like the idea of a clear handle though. If I made one, I'd use the clear vinyl we cover our warning lables with. However, I fear that all the stitching and inside raw edges will give it a rather ragged look. The neat thing about how a leather hackey is made, is that the stiches, and edges, and knot don't show. They will through the clear vinyl.

What about monkey-fist handles? Aren't they quite heavy?

The new world record was set 22 jun 2003 in Moscow at Moscow BASE Open Air Festival - 26-way BASE jump from Ostankino Tower. Among the others from tower jumped Johnny Utah, Jeb Corliss, Eric Jean Fradet, Valery Rozov, Denis Lenchevsky, James Freeman... The video will be soon at www.jumptower.com
Now you can see the shot of 20-way from 21 june at the same site.

    Here it is!: :)

The only thing I dont like about vector's is the reserve pin scarr's the reserve flap.

Oh yeah, and answering the question in this thread - I would still choose Vector 3 - I love the SkyHook idea! :)

it's all going to depend on exactly what they're doing and what they'll agree to do it for.

I was thinking of 'Moonraker' chute fight, 'Octopusy' scene, or 'Drop Zone' streamer (caused by cut cutaway cable) sequence.

B.J. Worth is currently The Chairman of the Board of the United States Parachute Association. (1)

He is also a movie stunt coordinator doing skydiving related stunts -- most notably in the James Bond series. (2)

He is also a very well known and well respected world record size big-way organizer (3) and has been instrumental in a number of other high-profile skydives. (4)

Is there something you're specifically looking for?

I admire B.J. Worth. Here comes my next question - how much money can he make from each James Bond movie. I am asking because that has to be a very lucky man. Traveling, doing what you love and then watching 'James Bond' movie with friends and be able to say - look - that's me!... :)

So how much can B.J. (or other stuntmen) make of let's say 'Golden Eye' or 'Moonraker'. I am sure these figures are not some kind of secret... I am simply looking for some industry rates, not B.J.'s personal financial data. I am also courios and jealous :P.

    schweet ...

The micron is outta the running. Yes I want the B12's. I did my first 50 jumps on static line/freefall rounds and they had the b12's. I liked their convenience even if it adds a little to the gear check.

If the B12s are sans stainless than the stainless is out too.

    Thanks for the input.

The Micron does not offer the chest rings because the yoke in cut in the way that chest rings are simply not needed. Also, only Micron comes with Sky-hook (if you care about one). Just my $0.02 ;)

Though Stainless Grommets are still an option, Precision now recommends softlinks and Brass #8's for their sliders. As it was explained to me, the lighter material allows for a more consistant opening. The heavier stainless grommets tend to start there way down the lines quicker and that's generally not a lot of fun.

That's what I've heard, too. Heavier stainless steel slider grommets, because of their weight, build more speed and momentum on their way down the lines. =canopy spreads out/opens faster.
