We plan to watch it tonight. Arrived Tuesday from Netflix (Netflix rocks).

I hope it is as good as expected, despite Brad Pitt. I have a weird aversion to Pitt--always have. While he is a decent actor, I can't help but think he doesn't really get half the roles he plays. Ironically for me, I cannot take him seriously.

You will hate him in this. I could not agree with your statement about his acting until watching this. Keep in mind it's Tarantino, so it's supposed to be cheesy.

  2. Just do what I did with my Frigidaire dishwasher after two visits from the repair man.

-Rip it out without care and drag it across the cement to the pickup and throw it in.
-Drive to the place I bought it, and back up to the shipping and receiving area.
-Open the tailgate and kick the piece of shit off the back, effectively destroying the useless thing.
-Hand the wide eyed, open mouthed workers the receipt.
    -Kindly ask for a refund.:)

  3. The last episode of NOVA was an expedition up Kilimanjaro. If you get there before 2015, you'll be able to see what's left of the glacier up there. It looks amazing. I have now added Kilimanjaro to my bucket list, which already has Denali on it.

Those levees had held for a long, long time.

They broke because Katrina hit at just the right angle and intensity. The 17th street canal has failed before.

Complacency? Hardly. It is simply way too expensive to provide us with complete hurricane protection. It's the way it is. I'm not complaining. Neither should anyone who doesn't live here.

It goes so much deeper than that. Almost to the point of being impossible to believe. Remember right after Katrina when they said almost a thousand police officers just bugged out? It turns out most of them never existed to start with. Their paychecks did, but not the officers.

New Orleans has always had, and always will have corruption. It's one of the many things that sets this city apart from others.

There are elevated roads across the city, well within walking distance for healthy people, in what was a relatively slow increase in water levels unless you were right at the levy break. The entire school bus and city bus fleets sat there, first unused, then eventually under water.

Have you ever been in a hurricane? Try going anywhere in 120 mph winds. Sure you do it in freefall, try it standing up. There are so many things that could have been done better, but to think that you can outrun a levee break in New Orleans by any conventional means is unrealistic.

Only in the Big Easy would huge numbers of healthy people sit on their porch, knowing they lived below sea level, and watch the water rise.

You forget to mention that these same porch monkeys are also collecting welfare, social security and unemployment. Come on. Don't sugar coat it. Tell us how you really feel!;)

New Orleans is a laid back city. Most people didn't leave because they either couldn't afford it, or couldn't care less. The latter weren't the ones begging for help.

Many people here are stubborn, and not nearly as wise as yourself. They rode out hurricanes in the past, and didn't have any troubles. They evacuated in the past, only to find out it was for no reason. They thought they were ok. Some were, some weren't.

But what the hell do I know. I'm an ignorant New Orleanian who likes to sit on his porch and drink beer on occasion.

    Where Yat? :P

Isn't it interesting how 97% of the voters here say ship crews should be armed against pirates.

And yet, nowhere near that number think it's a good idea for citizens to be armed in their own homes to resist against attacking criminals.

I wonder what makes the difference?

They aren't counting on us to deliver containers of cheap merchandise for them...
