Watching the news, the one item that works great are their outdoor microphones - they've definitely got that tech sorted.

The reporters may be barely able to stand against the wind, but you can hear them crystal clear.

Watching the weather (NC & SC areas for Hurricane Florence), it seems the public gets fixated on the Hurricane “Level” number and don’t really look into the details which can potentially be disastrous. I have friends that live in these coastal areas and been speaking with them on the phone. One contact noted “I’m on higher ground than “in town”, but I just looked at the elevation map and town is 6ft elevation; he’s only 8ft. He’s 75 so I’m certain he’s not ever checked this on the internet.

Being a pilot and yachtsman, I’ve studied weather for years, but note now that even though we have the best available resources, models and methods to disseminate the information – we’ve “dumbed” it down. I’m watching this on television now and there is not a single mention of the air pressure. With silly descriptions like “heat index” and “wind chill”, the mainstream weather reports today just simply about “do I need a jacket or umbrella today”.

I hope that those that think a category 1 or 2 hurricane is nothing to really be concerned about, don’t find the contrary.

Those words actually do mean roughly the same thing. Probability is the measurement of the likely outcome.

However, I get where you were going with this - "probable" which is a likely outcome.

1) Your FAI "A" doesn't expire (whether provided by USPA or BPA), however your USPA/BPA membership(s) expire every 12 months and must be renewed.

2) At 50 jumps and a 10yr layoff; yes some refresher training is definitely advised.

3) Cypres (of prior years) expired at 12 years past date of manufacture; the 4 & 8 year service intervals had a +/- 6mo grace period. As you noted it was a Cypres 1, it is quite possibly expired and now a paperweight.

Take your logbook and all equipment to the DZ and have a chat with them; they'll get you back in the air.

On a complete side note, living in the UK, we never see Alaska Airlines planes, so whenever I see a photo of one of their fleet, my first thought is "Why is there a picture of Bob Marley on the tail fin"? Only when I can see the rest of the of the photo, do I realise "Oh, Alaska; it's an Inuit"

You can thank your government for that. The oil isint really any more expensive in AUS or the EU, but the government taxes the shit out of it so most of what your paying is taxes and not the cost of the fuel itself.

OUCH...

I flew an hour in the P51 "Crazy Horse 2" in Kissimmee. On the way out to the practice area the instructor asked if I wanted to take it easy or fly more aggressively. I replied "I've paid a lot of money; I want to fly the hell out this thing" - which we did; a lot of fun and highly recommended.

I so hope an interviewer asks Prince Philip what he thinks of Trump. Oh please; oh please
