  1. Seeing the thread come up again inspired me to read through it. What an adventure this is! I've met quite some of the people who posted here and I've got more I plan on meeting. Reading about things I did sure brings them back. I do have occassional moments of frustration when it takes me longer to get the hang of something than it probably would have 20 years ago, but it sure doesn't discourage me for long. I am definitely keeping on jumping..... nine jumps last week and it's still the first part of March.... not too bad. Sure hope you have as much fun as I've been having. :)

  2. Wow!! Thanks, everyone. I'm getting the impression, that my trip there is not going to be anywhere near long enough. I might just have to make a return trip.

  3. I get to make a short work trip to Austin, TX, and planned things so I'll have a bit of time to sightsee and skydive as well as work. It looks like there are dropzones in San Marcos and Temple that I could get to. Any suggestions for skydiving and/or sightseeing? :)

Our three kids are adopted from Russia, they were 6, 7 & 7 when we brought them here.

I should have emphasized it more, that I am sure younger children would love having parents that jump. My daughter was 18 when I started, so at that age she had an idea of what can go wrong. I should have defined the thread more about how it affects older children.

LIke mine.... they were in their early 30's when I started. They were pretty worried about me at first, especially when I didn't promptly call after making a jump to let them know I was fine. My daughter didn't find it particularly reassuring when I told her that she was my emergency contact and she'd be the first one to know if something had happened. When I think of the grief they gave me as teenagers........ :)They have since come to be pretty proud of me and show off pictures of me skydiving on a regular basis.

    Hi Everyone,
I've decided to pursue an AFF A license at age 46. I'm reading the threads on this forum with great interest and I'm pretty stoked to have found such an adventurous crowd!

    Just curious~~
I'd love to hear from those who picked up this sport in his/her 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's....:D

I started just a little over 2 years ago at age 57. I've managed to do a jump or two in those two years. B|

  7. The first time I flew with my rig i checked it. Neve again, if I can help it. I got through security and heard my name being paged. When I returned to the ticket/baggage area, a new TSA agent had started opening my rig before someone stopped him. Fortunately, he started with the main and not the reserve. I was a bit grumpy with him. :)

If they want to swab and look at my rig, fine, but I'm going to be there with it to hopefully keep things from happening that shouldn't. And I have run into TSA agents severaly times that haven't had a clue what it was or if it was ok. I was there to explain. Oh, and the letter from TSA and x-ray card of the AAD did absolutely no good. They had to find the information in their own manuals. I make sure I allow plenty of time to get through security.

iphone is the greatest thing since velcro.....

btw, for those that don't know, ATT is matching verizons 69.99 unlimited talk plan, even though their not advertising it. Just call them, if you pay for their current unlimited plan. Heck, the guy even retro-ed it to the beginning of the billing cycle. If you have more than one iphone, it's even better. 69.99 for the first, and 49.99 for each additional phone. With 5 on our plan, (we use them for business), it saved us fully half on our bill.B|

Coverage is an issue in Idaho and carriers other than Verizon just don't cut it here.

we've had plenty of other carriers in the past and so far we've been happiest with verizon, which we have now. we're out of our contract, but whatever we do phonewise, we'll stay with verizon. as far as a need, we've identified one. when we're out and about, the gps and the ability to look up and find or call busnesses would be very nice. of course that could be taken care of by getting a gps for the car, but the idea of putting a gps in a car that already has a nav system in it just seams silly to me. (we have a toyota, but the maps are so old that it is nearly useless and last i heard it was north of $300 for updated dvds). we're going to new orleans this weekend, so we may think about just one of us getting a new phone after our nav system inevitable fucks us again.

Have you tried using Verizon's VZNavigator? It's avaailble for a monthly charge or by the day for a short trip. http://products.verizonwireless.com/index.aspx?id=fnd_navigator_features

  11. The additional cost for mine (through Verizon) was for the data plan to be able to use the web browser, etc. I went with the medium priced plan and haven't used all my available usage yet. That was $20 a month. Looking at their website now, I think that plan has vanished, but they have choice that is $10 a month. Much usage and that wouldn't be a very good choice. Watch out for adding apps to the phones. That adds up fast!!

  14. Well, I'm sorta watching. The opening ceremony is on tv while I'm grading exams. I'll probably try to actually watch the ice skating events, but since I'm teaching 6 classes, it will be multi-tasking most of the time. There's always something to grade![:/]

Some of us aren't math inclined.

There is a certain level beyond which the average person doesn't need to go. It depends on what career you plan on pursuing. An English major probably doesn't need to take calculus.

However, far too many people don't have even a basic level of understanding of algebra and geometry and that simply baffles me. Their excuse is usually something like "but I'm not good at math" which in my mind is essentially saying "but I'm illiterate." I'm not talking about anything all that advanced either, just the kind of stuff you'd grossly cover in the (for me) 9th grade.

    I don't get it.

I don't get it either. People will go to great lengths to hide the inability to read, but proudly boast, often in front of their kids, that they can't do math. >:(

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Do NOT do this!!!!!!!!!!!!

but the only person you should be talking to is your instructor

And what if the problem is that he has a really terrible instructor, not that I'm suggesting at all that it's the case here.

You know... somewhere in the world is an instructor deserving the title 'Worst instructor in the world!'. In fact, roughly half of all instructors are below average.

I would be very suspicious of any instructor who forbid me from talking to other instructors or experienced skydivers
about my experience. I've been around long enough to know better. Of course, I would ALSO talk to my instructor about any and all concerns I have, and I would be honest with my instructor about who I talk to and what I've heard from them. But tell me not to talk to others... and you're fired.

Learning to skydive is serious, deadly serious. If a student can't trust their instructors with their lives, he/she needs a new instructor, not advice from dz.com.

  17. Good to hear from you again. You really don't have to sell everything you own and neglect your family to become a skydiver, although, you may well go overboard at first. I was in so much trouble with my kids from time to time at first when I stayed late at bonfires and didn't call after jumping and things like that. Skydiving is still a huge part of my life, but my kids, grandkids and other activities have a place too. I play in two of college's community bands as well as the college jazz band. I still have a house and car, but there are things I might have done that don't have any great priority anymore... like new carpeting in the house or central heating and air that I once considered. My kids also joke that I am spending their inheritance (and they are always smiling when they ). :)

Is is possible to post the article here? Because I live in the Netherlands, where we don't have that magazine..

It's not an article... just a picture of me being presented with my 12-Hour Freefall Badge.
    I was given Award No. 5500. :)

In 700 jumps, not bad! :)

I think 12 hours of freefall is going to take me a while. A good part of my jumps are from a 182 and a chunk of those are 5k hop n'pops. 500 jumps and about 5 and a half hours of freefall.

Oh, well, I'm sure gonna have fun getting there. :)
