  1. :D The bravery and courage he showed should be applauded.

Thank you for reminding me of the best of craigslist. Now I have something to do with all this insomnia!

    Or spot an airplane.
    Or determine exit separation.
Or deal with turbulence under canopy.
    Or land out.
    Or launch a subterminal exit.
    Or deal with a bailout.

There's a lot to being a skydiver; freefall is only one small part of it.

    Or gear related questions
    Or packing
    Or good gear checks
    Or determining exit order
Or KNOWING WHEN TO SIT DOWN.

Shouldn't our AFF-I courses be designed to test a candidate's knowledge on that? Someone having the minimum freefall requirement doesn't guarantee they have that knowledge, and I'm sure we're all very familiar with the young, hipster kid with 400 jumps who has never looked out of a plane before and always pays a packer. When the young, hipster kid gets his AFF-I rating, however, everyone celebrates even though he flies like crap and his teaching skills leave little to be desired.

To put things in another safety perspective, who would you rather have on someone's first release dive? Weekend warrior or tunnelrat?

  3. You will learn more freefall skills in 60 minutes of tunnel than you will in 60 skydives.

You will learn zero parachute/spotting skills in 60 minutes of tunnel.

Whatever your tunnel/skydiving balance is is up to you. Some skydivers have never been in a tunnel, and some tunnelrats have never been skydiving. I prefer to spend money on the things that I want to spend money on, and if people think I spend too much time tunnelling or skydiving, then they can go f*** themselves.

  4. An update - The Plan Commission is holding a meeting in regards to this on Thursday, July 14 at 7 pm. The address is 414 Main St., Hobart, IN.

More info (stolen from the facebook event) below:

While I hesitate to get too excited about a wind tunnel near Chicago, Air Adventure has proposed plan changes to Silverstone Crossing in Hobart, IN (about an hour away from downtown) to include a wind tunnel and become an entertainment complex. The Plan Commission has concerns about amendments to the original plans and the overall look of the structure, and they are holding a public hearing on Thursday, July 14th at 7 pm (I was informed this date may change, and I will keep everyone posted as such.)

With the weight the public opinion holds at these hearings, this would be a great time for the skydiving community and our friends/family to show our support. I've posted additional information (including an excerpt from an email with one of the petitioners) below, and if anyone would like the formal request for support, please let me know, and I will email that along to you.

I hope you all can make it!

We can use as much support as we can get in this matter. Showing support from the community and a desire by the community to participate in the indoor skydiving activities would be a great advantage. Fill the room if you can. You will have the opportunity to express your opinion publicly and to state why you feel this business would be good for the community.

I attached a formal letter requesting a letter of support from your group, organization, or individuals. Please send the letter(s) by email or fax. Your letter(s) of support in addition to your presence at the public meeting would be an important advantage to us in receiving the approvals that will allow us to provide the indoor skydiving facility and services to the community. The following link will take you to a project page where you can view a video regarding the project, see the project presentation, fact sheet and other documents that will familiarize you with the Air Adventure project.

  5. I'm trying not to get too excited since it probably won't happen, but I am so freaking thrilled to see the possibility of a tunnel going up actually hitting a newspaper:

EDIT: I would like to add that I will not ditch SVCO and the awesome coaches there for this tunnel. It will only enhance my flying while in Denver. ;)

Oh yes...I'd almost forgotten that its our fault.:S

It's really important to establish blame when trying to understand the bigger picture :S

The US military logged over 60,000 civilian deaths in the Iraq war. I'm not sure how much blame can be placed on an 18-year old kid whose entire family has been blown up by the US wanting to get revenge on the US. When you kill 60,000 civilians, trying to pass the blame on to someone else as justification doesn't actually mean you were right in doing so.

so... would you go to the wedding or not? That was the question.

I have no idea. Her sister and I go back and forth on whether or not we will be going. Our cousin has already backed out (let's just say, our family isn't shy about not being overly supportive of this marriage.)

Advise her to get a pre-nup to protect her assets. In case he ever cheats again, she would keep her stuff and get a great deal of his.

    All he has is debt!

AD, glad someone around here remembers me! :D

Bill, I think you're right. If I talk to her simply addressing the potential outcomes she may not have thought of, that's pretty much all I can do.

Squeak, no she is fine to make her own decisions, but the brain injury prevents her from being able to physically do things.

Mary, you are right on. She needs a lawyer, and she probably hasn't thought of that.

  10. It's been awhile since I've used dz.com as a sounding board, but I'm stuck on what to do, and the wedding date is right around the corner.

Long story short - a family member started dating someone weeks after her ex-husband moved out. She was blissfully happy until she found out that the new guy she was dating cheated on her just six months in. She cried to me a lot about it, and when she asked me what I would do in her situation, I told her, "Dump the bastard." She was about to kick him out (he and his kids moved in to her house), and then (to solve the dilemma he was in) he proposed!!! She accepted and seems to be having delusions of a happy life ever since. Since the proposal, I told him that I would personally rip his balls off if he ever cheated on her again.

She's going to marry him, and there's nothing I can do about it. She has a major brain injury, can't work and lives on a very tight income. She has a very beautiful house, and I'm worried that she'll lose the little she has because of this disaster she's running into.

If I tell her again that she should dump him, I risk her never speaking to me again. If I tell her that she's making a mistake, maybe there's a small chance that she'll rethink marrying him.

    What to do?

  11. I'm 31, and I'm much less of a nutjob now than I was 10 years ago. Overall, things seem to get better. I hope by 41 I finally have my shit together.

  12. Maybe you should just give up? Sounds like you put a lot of effort into being unhappy with dating. It's probably just not your thing, which is perfectly fine. But, it seems silly to keep trying it if it's not working for you.

  13. I think when you go for the hottest person in the room, "you pay your money, you take your chances." When you go for the person you are compatible with, and they happen to be hot, you'll probably find them to be less "messed up."

  14. I don't get addicted to many shows, but I am hooked on Dexter.

Unfortunately, I thought this season was such a let down. I am getting tired of all of the subplots. I don't care who Deb sleeps with (and I'm hoping that she is killed off early next season.) I don't care about Bautista's marriage issues. Quinn's veneers really drive me loony. I think Julia Stiles was an ok special guest, and she was given the unfortunate spot of appearing after John Lithgow's amazing performance. The show keeps losing more and more of its dark humor that got me hooked initially. I hope next season is more Dexter and less other stuff.

My favorite review for the wheelmate:

    Quote

My girlfriend has always been distracted by truck drivers peering down and honking their rather loud horns while I'm driving along with her head in my lap; but not anymore thanks to the Wheelmate! The Wheel Desk Tray acts as a perfect shield for intrusive eyes and it has the added bonus of holding the sandwiches I tell her to make before taking another nice relaxing drive.
