it is very hard for me not to be a little mad a Rick for that, that is, if it is true that the chute was inappropriate for Shayna's use

There may also be some disaplinary action by the USPA if they get wind of this situation. Instructors are responsibal for wingloading and sizing student reserves. If the Student weighed 115 lbs then with the added weight of gear it would have put her over 1-1 on a PDR 126. I feel 0.8-1 is tops WL for student in winds under 14 MPH. I do not know how much she weighs, but really a 190-126 combination just sounds wrong. The way superfletch describes what the rig looked like closed, how the closing flaps wouldn't overlap, dosen't surprise me when I found out she had a toggle fire on deployment, it just seems like too much shit crammed in there and something would probably work it way loose. However that is just speculation, based on an educated geuss.

  2. Post: Insurance it very available if you want it. Almost every group policy from an employer will cover it. I've used it before and they never blinked twice. There is also major medical coverage availble for just this type of situation. It does'nt cover DR visits but it covers ER and surgery costs. If you are with out medical insurance and you are skydiving you have no one but yourself yo blame when you hurt yourself and you medical bills pile up.

If you have enough money to skydive you have enough money to get at least major medical coverage. If you choose not to, don't come asking for money later. <<<<<<<<<

BIG DITTO.... I broke my left ankle in July, no medical insurance. $17,000 and 2 screws later I'm still paying the hospital. I checked into insurance since, and it $118 dollars a month for both of us, with an annual deduction of $3500. After that the insurance pays 100%. I could have afforded that, instead now I'm scared to jump on this ankle until all the swelling and stiffness goes away, I can't go another 4 months without work. Also I asked if they had any exclusions for dangerous sports and I asked specifically asked about skydiving, he could not find anything that would exclude my clam for a skydiving related accident, only that some types of dangerous employment may jack up the premium.

  3. About the only course of action she had here was to pump the risers and toggles for all she was worth.<<

Or once one realizes that pumping the breaks will not fix the slider, with both hands if nessary suspend you entire weight on the opposite side riser, to GET THE CANOPY LEVEL OVERHEAD! Then releasing a little bit of tension to allow it to turn 90 degrees or so and aim for a big grassy field, PLF.

Also if you pump the toggles and the slider is still stuck up the lines, flare fully, and hold momentarly, then only pump the lower end of the stroke will clear the slider. But in any case never give up.

  4. When you go back and re read you post you will notice an edit button on top of you post, you can use that to edit you post instead of writing a new on to fix it, there is also a spell check. Thank you for posting the details about her school teacher starting the deal and it snowballing, I don't believe the student in this case is purpoisly trying to give skydiving a black eye, but her BF should know better about the media, be an experienced skydiver, and I also believe they are both reading all of this somewhere and are probably scared to post cause they feel they might get flamed. I hope thing work out for her, and her baby. Her Instructor should have known better than to take her to another DZ after when the first refused to let them jump. It is a conflict of interest. My wife is a jumper and I am very causious about telling her what to do, because it is a conflict of interest. I'm not stating this because I have first hand info about their relationship, but sometimes lovers will purposly avoid certian instruction due to not wanting to embaris her or he may have been blinded by love and overlooked some things in her training. Again it is a conflict of interest, and if one is to do so, should be treated bussiness as usual and try hard not to let his judgment become cloudy.

My $.02 worth and I purposly leave the misspelling in for its originality:)

  5. The best people to ask are the instructors at your home DZ that have seen your ablities <<<<<

  6. Hay man, I just read you post and wanted to let you know what works for me in that situation. Flare the canopy and hold the toggles down, than pump at the bottom of the stroke, about 1 ft. usualy brings the slider down faster than just pumping the entire stroke of the flare. Understand what I'm describing?

  7. You know some store will charge you 5% to use a debit card to pay for you purchase if it under a certian amount. Lets say you want to buy a $1 pack of gum. If your minumin is $5 dollars to use a debit card than you have to pay a surcharge. The local DZ in my area accepts Skyride, I told the DZO to charge a $35 dollar surcharge to the customer to accept their cirtificates, his response was they already owe hin $1200 in cirtificates now. I ask him why he wouldn't stop accepting them, his response was "I think it a good idea" and he had the same idea long time ago, but there was not the internet then. He would be able to get $35 upfront, then he would have to wait months to recieve the other $145. His response was he would hate to see local
customers have to drive hours away to find a place that accept them. I asked him why hw wouldn't pay the USPA GM policy, his response was he need someone to write a description for the add in Parachutist. Any way this guy (the DZO) as you can tell is an idiot. I no longer jump there, or work as an Instructor there going on a year. I do not believe he will be able to renew his lease with the airport authority, so there is one DZ that accepts Skyride and dosen't belong to the USPA GM thats going away. IF only all DZ's that accept Skyride would close then Skyride would go away also.

  8. MY bad I meant right, not left. I didn't, but you did get to see the gear, so I believe your first hand account. Apparently there was not a tension knot and I retract my eiarlier statment that there was, and appoligise and hope I wasen't misleading to anyone.

  9. I am by no way an expert after watching the video on every channel, but it is apparent to me she had a tension knott, trapping the slider up. Turn on your TV and you will probably get a chance to see it again tonight. I didn't see fabric trapped but the position of the slider up the lines, the distortion of the left side of the canopy, and the way it was turning you can obvously tell the slider was hung up and all I can figure out is a tension knot.

  10. OMG it's on Fox News with Sheppard Smith, and it's on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, and she was on a live interview with CNN. She has a trust fund set up now, where people can donate to her and her baby.

  11. I saw it on the 10 pm news last night here in Louisiana. My first thought was why didn't she use input on the opposite riser to stop the fucking spin. Who cares about the slider on her reserve being up, If she had only tried to stop the spin she might have made a better landing. I always teach my students to stop the spin before they start to lose blood to the brain. Has this occurred to anyone else who watched the video. The fact that her rig had a main that was to big for the container, or weather she was dating her Instructor is of no importance. The main goal IMO is for students to understand to immedietely grab risers and use opposite input to stop the spin. You have to get a stable canopy over head if you want to trouble shoot the problem and possibly walk away. I also heard on the news she (landed) spun into an asphalt parking lot. If she could have got that reserve flying strait, who cares if she had nothing to flare with, or the fact that her slider was up.She could have hit in the grass, and PLF ed and ended up with less distortion of her face.

anyway sorry about the rant, it is only my 2 cents.
    Big nelli out.

  12. I call it Z fold instead of S fold. I have found that not making the first fold before rolling it will tear the skin on the canopy, check it out, the gromet on the slider sandwitches the skin to the gromet on the d-bag, and will tear the fabric on deployment. I do not know hoy to psyco pack. hope this helps.

  13. No, I own a Pilot 132 and have never had a bad opening, I chose the canopy because I jump camera, and have about 400 jumps on Sabre2 150.
I find the Pilot to snivel a bit longer/ big slider. I not interested in longer swoops, or harder dives. I am happy with the performance of the Pilot, but was courious because of the other thread Sabre2 vs. Pilot. I wanted to start another thread away from the heated controversy, and ask if anyone had ever had a bad opening. The answer is yes, but they all attribute it to there own packing. Thanks every one.

  15. About 85% of the time I would get tipped usually $20 bucks, one time I got $100. The deal was to split tips with the video flyer if there was one. IF no video then the whole tip was yours. ;)
