If you are just using a carabiner to clip into the safety cable, dont expect it to do anything if you fall other than ensure that you hit your chin on every rung on the way down. Those rubber "stoppers" every 40 feet are not stoppers at all... they are intended to hold the cable close to the ladder so the wind doesn't blow it around. If you fall 40 feet onto one of those, it will just rip right off and you'll go on thru the next one.

However, if you're that worried about safety on the climb up, look into getting a safety climb device that will actually catch you if you fall...

I was told the same info a couple of days ago...that you need an actual fall arrestor (if that is the right term) on the cable as well as a shock absorbing tie in.

  2. What are the main concerns (aside from tape shrinkage) to gear from salt water immersions?

Line damage? Canopy porosity? Canopy failure? Stitching failure?

This is in relation to BASE gear, so I'm not concerned with AAD's or an obvious reserve repack

  3. How quickly will salt water landings degrade a canopy? Would it be best to place the canopy in a bag and keep it wet after landing until it can get a fresh water immersion/soaking? (to keep the salts from crystalizing and microscopicly shredding the material)

Would the degradation to material be less noticable on a round than a square?

  5. I found a 120' S with an all sand landing area. No obstacles. Heading performance is a non-issue as you could land straight in regardless of your heading...

D-bag or TARD? I've heard of 140' SL jumps, but 120 seems too low. How long would the expected canopy ride last?

Yes I've done a search...no I don't plan on solo'ing the thing tonight or anything...just looking for input.

  6. Flip flops are not conducive to running from the man...I reccomend ground crew wears good shoes.

Fact is, if someone is not "stealthy", you cannot teach them to be stealthy as you are booking away.

    Wow. That's stunning.

Did he ever figure out what happened? Was there some kind of misrigging on the static line? Maybe the bridle snagged on the object?

He went to the object the next day and couldn't find the bridle or pilot chute, so there's no way of knowing exactly what happened, but it's almost certain that the bridle and/or pilot chute snagged on the object. The tie off point was a rail recessed about 5 feet from the exit point. Between the tie off point and the exit point there is metal grating. Our best guess is the pilot chute got dragged along the grating and snagged something. The same exit point and tie off point had been used successfully in the past.

Marty said the bridle attachment point was designed to fail at 400 lbs and leave a small rectangular hole like that.

Why not tie a runner of 900 Dacron or climbing rope or something to seperate the bridle from the object?

This also leads me to believe the breakcord/bridle attachment point was directly below the PC instead of down a couple feet...I've been taught (by Todd @ Apex)to attach the break cord to the bridle as close to the canopy as possible without the risking canopy hitting the object on extraction.

  8. I'm going to be on the road a lot and signed up for this last night - http://www.medjetassist.com.

If you require in-patient care over 150 miles from home, they put you on a plane with an ICU nurse and fly you home. Includes Norway...and Idaho. From what I hear if you bust yourself up in Moab the local hospital has to farm you out somewhere else anyways...

  10. I've been to hyperstealth.com before. Did you check out the passive negative ion generators that they build into BDU collars or boonie hats? Made to keep you more alert without amphetimines...used by the SEALs and Delta Force...cool stuff.

Honest question: why would you want a rig in camouflage unless you're actually using it for military jumps?

Some people want to be seen, some people do not want to be seen. Guess it depends on which category you fall in.

I got tired of having my hands spanked with risers. I wait.

In your opinion,(or anyone else's) did the risers hitting your hands ever contribute to an off heading? Or is there too much energy in the system for riser strike to make a difference?

  13. It takes about 2 yds of cordura to make a BASE rig. Regular colors are like 7-9 dollars a yard thru Paragear...before a discount.

So supplying a manufacturer with custom cordura really has a negligible effect on the final price.

BTW, the 725 coated Multicam I bought was ~20 bucks a yard.

  14. Nice, someone has actually seen them.

I'm wondering what was wrong with the tuck tab riser covers though? I have a Vector3, and my riser covers have never come loose. I was under the impression that the tuck tab failures had to do with people hanging their rigs, which RWS doesn't reccomend.

Are these magnetic riser covers a fix for people that hang their rigs against RWS instructions? Or an overall design improvement?

  15. I know there have been several threads in relation to some of the new Relative Workshop options recently...but they seemed mostly speculative.

Did anyone get a chance at Nationals to actually check out the new riser covers and 3-D foam?

Does the 3-D foam option negate the deluxe backpad option? Or is it in addition to?

She lied. You seem to be ok with it.

Given the circumstances, yes I'm very Ok with it.

Then you are probably a liar to, because shit tends to cling together.

Todd, Jimmy and Marta are good people. If she lied to them, and tried to put their livelyhoods and years of hard work at risk...FUCK HER...and anyone who attempts to support her actions.

  17. Where did you end up going?

    I like Perris personally...

On a weekend, just have manifest make an announcement that you are on solo status looking for someone to jump with...someone will probably step up.

On a weekday, ask for the rw load organizer. If it's slow, you'll get a 2 way with someone who can definately help you out.
