  1. I know there's been plenty of discussion on the merits of the y-strap modification for tandem harnesses.

On Saturday I took some pictures of a tandem.

Take a look at the attached picture. This girl was so flexible. I think the picture shows the why the y-strap is a good addition to the tandem harness.

    Regards.

  2. On Saturday, during the climb to altitude, I discovered that one of the 'little red triangles' had broken off the stroboframe used for my CX12. I have no idea how that happened. Maybe the plastic got weak with age.
So, today I ordered an RRS replacement. It was more expensive than the stroboframe. But it looks like a quality product.

If you'd like to attend a class, I can pass that info along and we can send you home with some templates ready for new video clips. Having templates ready for Vegas and for DVD menus makes things go smoothly.

    Chris

I'd like to attend the class too! When & where?
I've just started jumping the CX12.
But now I've to to learn a new workflow for creating DVD's. I've just ordered Vegas Platinum. Should be here in a day or two.

I don't know anything about templates in Vegas yet, all my past experience is w/ Premiere. Any help, suggestions, (sharing of templates if I ever learn how to use that feature) is appreciated.

    later.

  4. I shot still photos of a tandem passenger and gave them a CD with the images.
They took the CD/images to be devoped.

The developer told them that they would need written authorization from the photographer (me) before they would print/develop the images.

Does anyone have something already written up that I could use for this purpose?

    Thanks in advance,
    -mh.

Seriously now...what would YOU like a LANC control to do for you besides start/stop/indicate?

I'd guess that start/stop/indicate/power on-off/ would serve the needs of almost all but a few.

A remote wireless mic setup would be a very cool addition however.

  7. Some of the larger airports that I've flown small (4 or 6 seaters) planes into include Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, (Germany), Nagoya (Japan), St. Louis, Midway, KC, Oakland (CA), and probably the most often into Minneapolis. Into MSP it usually goes like this...
ATC: "Cessna 345, traffic is at your two oclock and 3 miles".
    C-N12345: "looking"
ATC: "Cessna 345, traffic is at your one o'clock and 2 miles".
    C-N12345: "looking"
ATC: "Cessna 345, traffic is at your 12 o'clock and 1 mile".
    C-N12345: "We have the traffic"
ATC: "Cessna 345, follow the DC-10. Caution wake turbulence. Cleared to land runway 30 left. Keep your speed up."
From my experience with ATC they are just great.

After dinking around with my CX7, there is a sort of a remote control through the AV cable, it's just hidden in the "D" shaped A/V connector. Think it's time to order a cheap import A/V cable to cut into bits. Shouldn't be a lot of trouble to mod a cable to have a minijack on it.
I'll report back once I/if I figure it out.

    DSE,

Just for clarification... your intended purpose for installing the minijack is to provide a place to plug in a cameye?

I wonder if it was her first skydive or had she had any other jumps under her belt?

Edited: Just read entire thread... I guess this student did have many jumps. (Thank goodness) :S

The posted video was of Jump #3 for her.
She did tandem #1 two years earlier. Tandem #2 earlier this summer.
Then the AFF level 1 in the video. AFTER that AFF-1, she proceeded to graduate and since then has made about 50 more jumps this summer.

  10. I could be completely wrong, it's been a while since I've read the manual that came with the flash but, IIRC...

I think the IR focusing assist light will only activate during a low light situation. So, if your typical use for flash is for fill to elimiate shadows on a sunny day, it should not be an issue. This is what I typically use external flash for.

It also may not be an issue if you are using a fixed manual focus.

If you are using auto focus in a low light setting, then it could be an issue.

But you know what they say, when all else fails, read the book.
    Good luck.

fooling the camera into a setting other than white was never the intended purpose of White Balance.

This may be true. But, by setting a custom WB the camera can produce desired results with less post processing. There are products that can help with this in a controlled manner to give consistent results such as the Warm Cards available here...
    http://www.studio1productions.com/warmcards.htm

These cards will help adjust WB to produce either a warmer or cooler image by "fooling" the camera White Balance setting to something other than true white.
This may be exactly what the cameraman wants and adjusting WB may be the best way to accomplish the goal.
While these cards are marketed for video, they work with digital still cameras just as well in order to set a custom white balance to give either warmer or cooler results if that is what the cameraman wants.

  12. I've been checking and re-checking the royal lens web site for over a month and when I try to order, it continues to be out of stock. I've only tried to order the 30mm thread size so maybe they have the other sizes. I tried sending them an email to ask but got no reply.

I tried Para gear too. Their site at least let me place an order but I got an email from them a day or two later that said they were out of stock as well and they were unable to get any from Royal Lens.

Anybody else got any other ideas?

  13. Here are pics of mine as it was last year.

Right now I'm in the process of re-mounting everything. I'm going to try to put the (new/not pictured) 30D on the right and the (new/not pictured) pc-1000 on the left. Just trying to find time to work on it.

I don't jump with the flash everytime. You will see a stroboframe on the back that I used to set up the flash attach point. That did two things for me. Allowed a quick(?) attach point and also a platform off set to the left where I needed it.

I have a second flash and can mount it to this rig. It works on the ground but I haven't jumped it yet with two flashes at the same time.
