By no means do I mean to trivialize what's going on, it's realy cool that there's going to be a tunnel on Canadain soil, but it's not really that major to anyone living in the west (remember, we're here too you know)! I can get a ticket to Palm Springs (Perris tunnel) or Pheonix (Eloy Tunnel) for the same or less money than going to Montreal, never mind the guys in Vancouver, they can get even cheaper tickets to the states seeing as they're more of a hub than Edmonton.

    True, true...

Actually, I just thought of a way that might actually affect you Western Canadians indirectly:
    The Future Canada 100-Way Record!

Canadians in the East will now become better RW bellyflyers. Increase the pool of bigway flyers in this country. Make it more interesting for you westerners to come out to a future Canada Big Way record event!

And it happens -- since the most likely two dropzones for Canada Record are Skydive Burnaby (held the last record), and Nouvelair (supporter of tunnel, held the Canadian Nationals, at least in 2005). Both are within rough driving range of Skyventure Montreal (~7.5 hours and ~1 hour respectively). NouvelAir also happens to host Team Evolution, the Canada 4 way champions that are tunnel coaches and big supporters of the tunnel... (Their tunnel coaching helped me achieve my first 49-way at Perris P3 in May)

This could mean a bigger Canada Big Way Record when one is finally scheduled in the future!

Hmmmm... the world doesn't revolve around Central Canada.

It is more cost effective for Western Canadians to travel to Arizona or California to jump than it is to travel to Ontario or Quebec and the quality of the skydives are better. (and they have tunnels there as well).

Other nations such as Germany and Mexico are doing their National records in locations such as Eloy or Perris since that is where the lift is. Why insist that the Canadian Record must be set in Canada? The Drop Zones don't make money off the additional aircraft being flown in and they are at risk if the event is weathered out.

And to say that a tunnel in Montreal will mean that Central Canadians will be better belly flyers than Western Canadians is quite the stretch of logic. Tunnels are tools, not magic wands.

In addition, Calgary's tunnel will be onstream in a couple of years as well.

  2. Why would Canada and Mexico want to have a shared currency with the US?

Due to the size of the US Economy compared to the Canadian and Mexican economies, the US would dictate the monetary policy for all three nations.

    Pass.

  3. Hard to believe a year has passed since Chris was killed in Afganistan.

He is very much remembered by his friends and his name comes up quite often at the Dropzone.

We'll raise our glasses in his memory tonight by the Bonfire.

    Miss you like crazy!

    Thanks!

I still do not agree that a week or more of sun exposure, especially in more northern latitudes is a death sentence for a canopy.

We have recovered plenty of tandem and other cutaway at my dz after a long time missing, that were in mostly direct sunlight, and almost all of them got a clean bill of health from the manufacturer.

We are running about 18 hours of daylight this time of year at this northern latitude. Wouldn't want to cook a canopy for a week but knock yourself out.

How did the storm handle in comparison to other 7 cells?

A number of national teams will be using the PD Storm in September's World CF Competition.

So far the reviews are positive with respect to CF Performance compared to the Triathlons. (Better flare, better response, etc).

Should be some good write-ups over the next couple of months as they test the edge of the envelope.

As cepox said...talk to tony knight. We launched a linked 3 way out of it and had no problems at all. Front float, read float, one inside. Actually it was the best three way exit I've every experienced.

We used one for a season as a backup plane a dozen years ago before getting rid of it (and don't miss it at all)

No problems taking a three way out of it but for a demo with a pilot who hasn't dropped jumpers out of it I would just go single file out (KISS).

The crowd doesnt care what type of exit you do.

  9. Classic Accuracy (and Style) was king when the only lift was Cessnas.

Skydiving is a social sport/hobby that caters to the people who like doing "Stuff" with other people. Turbine Aircraft and better training has helped facilitate the larger stuff in all disciplines.

Ten years ago, RW was supposed to be on the downturn and being replaced by Freefly. Ten years later the tent is still big enough for everyone.

Even the Wingsuit Flyers are doing larger and larger flock dives and it wont be long before the freeflyers get their first 100 way.

Bet you any money that 20 years from now, I'll still be doing RW with lots of friends!

I have not been living in Canada for 12 years now, but I am still pretty sure that most Canadians would rather have their livers pulled out through their noses with a fork than become part of the USA...... [snip]

I kind of like my liver where it is!.

However, other than a few individuals for their own reasons, there isnt any burning desire for Canadians to want to join the US of A. Economic Cooperation sure (and even that is touchy at times) but any political party who tried to win any seats on that platform would be winless at the polls.

We are neighbors with the US and many Canadians have many friends in the US (especially the skydiving community).

However the "I am Canadian" sentiment is very strong with the majority of Canadians and I, for one, will always be a "Canadian".

This normally becomes appartent during US Election Years when some Canadian Institutions and things we take for granted are attacked by the various American Politions as herasy and "Socialist". (I laugh cause I am conservitive in my politics). While it may be electioneering politics, I never want to see the Canadian Systems being dismantled as they would enivitably under a political North American Union.

  11. If it is near the dropzone I would do a normal jump (get out all the time dispatching students at 3500)

If it is far from the dropzone, deployment altitude would depend on the congestion on the ground. Heavily treed - higher. Open Country - lower (around 3 grand or so to ensure an opportunity to pick a spot for landing).

Junior jumpers should default to higher openings to allow for the adrenaline rush to pass and pick their landing area and their path to it.

  12. Good luck 'Chelle.

It's amazing how much like Herc that Bug looks.

I can just see the picture now - Herc on your Dad's Lap and Bug on yours. And your cat thouroughly unimpressed with the entire matter....

Don't I remember something about CRW Triathlons landing like shit? I mean pound your ass in weak flare shit? It's been a while since I read anything about that specific canopy. I just remember all the negative opinions about it compared to the standard Triathlon that I have.

The Canadian CF Team "The Plaid Jackets" moved to Triathlons years ago and only use Lightnings for jumps such as the 100 CF Way. They find the performance and landings far better than the Lightnings (although they landed the Lightning better than anyone else I've seen)
