  1. I did the same. I realised that in order to get to the next level that I'd have to commit to doing a huge amount of tunnel. I'm lucky in that there's been probably about 7 or 8 of us doing the same thing so we get to do some great jumps as we are all about the same level. If you don't have the resources and a tunnel close by then it'd be very difficult to progress. The standard is just so high these days.

When I had not as much time and jumps in the bigger group jumps would be inaccessible, mainly due being able to stay in control safely.

Each time I go, I always fly with Martin: https://www.facebook.com/MadRavens . Their prices are low as well and Prague is such an awesome city.

I'll definitely vouch for Martin, he's a top notch guy! I took public transport - it's very easy to get around and really cheap. Saves money for beer :)

  3. If you can fly to Manchester airport then the tunnel's only 15 minutes away. It's right next to the Trafford Centre so public transport to the tunnel is very available. If you do decide to fly in Manchester then pay a coach as they get tunnel at the cheapest rates and the coach+tunnel cost is lower than the walk in rate. Manchester gets a lot of italians coming here to train.

The other option if you have to take air transport is Skydive Arena in Prague - the walk in rate there is cheaper than the bulk cheapest rate available in the UK. Their sister tunnel in Slovakia is even cheaper I believe. I'll PM you some contact details if you wish. It's the same technology as the tunnel in Empuriabrava if you've flown there.

Flights within the EU are super cheap these days - we flew from Leeds to Prague for about 140 euro return each and these weren't the cheapest flights available.

  4. I do 20-30 mins/week once per week in one day. Friends of mine do the same but split over 2 consecutive days. Unless you're tunnel fit, the last few rotations can be pretty tough and you don't get as much benefit from them as at the start.

Don't do any more than 10mins in one session and leave at least an hour between sessions. If you can organise it with the tunnel, try to have 2 mins in then 4 mins out to review footage and rest.

Airkix were doing a deal, 20mins/day for 7 consecutive days (i.e. 140 minutes) for USD850 which was a total steal. One of my friends went from flying head down pretty solidly to just about getting outface nailed in that time.. so basically the intensive tunnel camp does work if you can afford it (or you live so close to the tunnel you can pick up offers like this..)

Coffee - not so much. (But then to be honest, London is still pretty average as well)

You get spoiled for coffee in Oz though. Very expensive now (or maybe that's just the exchange rate :$) but damn you guys do it right. The home of the flat white I believe (?)

Edited to add: Oh dear. You're from NZ (but BPA licence so you're from the UK??) sorry. Hope I didn't offend you :P;)

No, you'd be drinking beer that doesn't taste so bad you have numb your tongue by freezing it first.

Haha.. There are some great craft beers in the 'States if you're willing to look for them. My fave commonly-available one is Blue Moon. Very citrusy. Yum. :)

  7. If you're feeling ambitious, download some 3d software called blender - you can create 3d models like a stick man and then rotate him to whatever angle you want and use screenshots of that as you need.

It might take you some time though.. fun to do however.

Absolutely no one who does not themselves have an active, current AFF rating, and known capabilities as such to me personally, is lurking any AFF dive that I'm involved with. Regardless of their other cumulative jump #'s / supposed experience.

I think it would be unfair for the AFF student who's spent big bucks on ground school and the jump itself to have either him or both AFFI's potentially distracted by someone else on the jump notwithstanding the safety aspects too.

  9. Have a chat with the manufacturer. My tunnel suit is cordura and my freefly suit is alighter cordura. I have double layers in the legs for extra power. Basically they will tailor the suit for you. You're not particularly massive though so you don't need anything too extreme. You might be able to get something second hand :)
P.S. baggier suits give you more drag but aren't much easier to fly than a correctly fitting one so get one that fits you. It might also give you bad habits that will take time to sort out later.
