What a great guy! I clicked on this post hoping to hear of some great feat or organised event. He was so welcoming, warm and had a great sense of humour. He had a way of looking sideways at you that made you feel he knew exactly what you were thinking. He was so helpful on my first visit to Russia. He smiled whenever he saw me - I think he thought I looked funny. I remember the first time I met him in 2000 at the top of Kjerag where he was wearing a russian made wingsuit - Bloody cool bit of gear. I told him it would be awesome in a disco. At the time, I could barely fly further on my own wingsuit than I could track so I was considering other uses for the colourful suits. This is very sad news. My thoughts go to the Rusian crew whom are very close. I am sure there will be a picture of Dima go up in the bar where he will stay with his friends.

    Scary Landing

I remember landing on it too in front of a family that were perched on the rock. I had to I was in a low slot in one of the old world record jumps in 98. Regards Slim
  3. You are refering to Steve Cooper known as "Coops". I don't believe he is BASE jumping much anymore but he is with the police force in Salem. He does like to do stuff from time to time. I doubt he is interested in any "night stuff" though. As for the earlier story by Stefan - yes it was a small group of us (organised by Dwain) jumping a hotel in Oz and landing on the beach. It was a hilarious time taunting the security guard whom became quite frustrated with us having to charge down the beach after us each time we landed into the dark. We pushed our luck and only ceased operations after one more jump when the police staked the building out with the local TV Station. Dwains words when the cops arrived 'Well now its getting interesting!" WE used the element of surprise to time our exits. It can actaully work to your advantage to have security around if they are highly visible and fat. We all got away with it. We also pondered the same question - what would we be charged with had we been caught. Regards Slim
  4. Valid Point Mr Sabre Dave, It's just that electrical tape is readily accessible at any petrol station or grocery store on the planet. Break cord isn't. I understand that it may then be argued "Why don't you buy heaps of it and carry it with you?" Unfortunately not all jumpers plan so well ahead in advance and forget to bring it. Tape is very easy to get readily and I would argue that it really does work well with some common sense. Regards SlimQuote
  5. Yeah mate, I was with him and we strung together all the bits of stuff we had with us so he wouldn't rip up his PC. That was the deal he'd PCA me first then SL himself but I had to give up my binocular strap. I was later inspired to tie off to a daggy bush on top of a cliff in Oz. Dam glad the bush didn't rip out by the roots. Answering the original thread. In Oz we use electrical tape a lot. I have made literally hundreds of jumps with it from all objects. There is no one science that says two wraps - five wraps or whatever. Use your noggin and test it before you jump. When its cold (ice or wet) and the tie off point has sharp edges - I wrap a lot more - if its round and a smooth surface - less wraps. But I always give it a tug to see if its enough to open my rig and lift the canopy. Simple idea and common sense stuff. I either loop it through the eye of the bridle where the PC attaches or I tie a loop in the bridle near the PC and run it through that. What's nice is a I have a tape in the leg starp of every one of my five rigs so I am ready to go to a PCA at a moments notice. You need it in Oz. I have been very impressed with the stuff - it is very simple. NB I always SL with a large PC on just in case. Funny thing is it is far more predictable deployment than a PCA from someone your not sure about. Luv Slim
  6. G'day K, So what's a 23 year old Pego that has 400- 500 BASE jumps after 15 years of skydiving with a frayed tail pocket, dodgy bridle attachment point, uneven home made brake settings and a split on the undersurface near the B line attachment point worth? It's been in water more times than I can remember - salt and fresh. Even been dragged over barbed wire in a few instances (she really went to pieces on that stuff), but the holes are all repaired with gaff tape ....... on both sides! She flares like a wet fart but bloody hell she'll open on heading. I borrowed $20 dollars to buy this little gem. You know for a while I was ripping quads slider down on that little baby! You just can't be shy on landing though its definitely a MAN's canopy. Retro fit some vents and she'll be as good as new! Very sporty and a neat brown and orange colour well suited to video. Buyers??????
  7. I was there last night flopping some rollovers off (the said bridge) and I told the story to some newbies. Great to see the story live and breath again. I was surprised to see it here on a forum the next day. Amusing writing style. Care to tell the next chapter about Runar in Goulburn court with the video?
  8. G'day guys, Sorry I have not watched this forum for a while and on other forums there are upset individuals that I do not wish to provoke. Things are on track for the event. I am working with Dann and Jasmina to run an event as good as the last. I will arrive in KL on December 17th with my wife, mother, brother and friends. It has become quite a team effort. Currently accommodation is being shored up and I will post shortly which hotel it will be. Basically expect to be in KL for a registration/Briefing on the 27th. You will need to have your gear and regsitration fee with you. Exactly where and when will depend on the final hotel. As far as good rates on airfares I am afraid these are very hard to come by now. I am travelling from Oz so I am unaware of the costs first hand to travel from the US. Rules will be emailed shortly for competitors to review and any comments or suggestions should be raised via email to me. I am touched by all the support and thank those that have gone out of their way to speak up. Please send any large photos to :[email protected] SLIM
  9. The excitment has certainly raised a few notches since the last posting. Firstly, the usual confusion on where and when gets asked. PLease read previous posts if you do not know. Several things have changed. The hotel we are all staying at is still not confirmed but I believe it will be located in the Empire Tower. Not the Corvus or Concord anymore. I am sorry for those that made bookings. We will also be doing a day of exhibition jumps from this building. It will not form part of the competition but will be a day of testing and trying it out. See photo http://www.emporis.info/en/il/im/?id=150591 I am sorry for this change but we are trying to get the best deal for the amount of jumpers. We have sent invitations to 57 people. I will close it at sixty so please apply if you are undecided. YOU NEED TO SEND YOUR FLIGHT INFORMATION TO DANN LEE NOW IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED AN INVITE. ([email protected]) MIXSA is very concerned people have applied and have no intention of attending. If you are going please forward your flight details. Otherwise it will be assumed you are not going and your slot will be given to someone else. The sooner you do it you will be confirmed. KL Tower is still intended to be the first building of the event however, once again it is a complicated array of negotiation around getting this building locked down. Petronas is confirmed and so is the Empire Tower. Menara Telekom is also still on the table. This is the state of play at the moment. Please email Dann your flight info. I will be arriving in KL on the 17th Dec. More info will follow soon as issues become more certain see www.basejump.org and go to forum..
  10. Malaysia International BASE World Cup. It’s on again and it is time to formally register and start hunting for the elusive flights that are tough to get at this time of year. SkyVenture and the MIXSA Team formally invite you to register to participate in this event. It is hoped to make it even better than last year. On the same dates in 2002 over 1100 jumps were made by 58 competitors representing 16 countries from KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers (World’s tallest building). We want to do the same again. We have a reputable safety record and we wish to maintain this high standard. Please do not apply if you have less than 100 BASE jumps, you are uncurrent or you have little experience with slider up or running launches. You will be disqualified immediately otherwise. An extremely high standard has been set and we intend to keep it that way. For those that have previously competed you will have preference in selection. (There are 50 slots available) The event will be held from 27th Dec 2003 to 5th January 2004. It is hoped to run the event from three buildings this year, however there is only approval for Petronas at this stage (two days on KL Tower and one day on Menara Telekom [Shark fin Building] is what is aimed for). This uncertainty was the same as last year and unfortunately the political climate makes it difficult to provide categorical assurances until we are standing at the exit point. I will do my best to provide any information as it comes to hand. Please especially watch www.basejump.org on the forum. Entry Fee will be $550 USD - NO DISCOUNTS This will cover your accommodation (for the competition only!), some expenses for the competition, registration with security, T-shirt, building access and some functions. There will at this stage be no airline sponsorship. This was not particularly effective last year and a number of people complained bitterly that they were frustrated by it. So it’s every man for himself to get to KL by the 26th. If you do not show up to registration on the 27th you will not get a pass and therefore will not be able to get into the building. Accommodation is either going to be at the Concord Hotel or Chorus Hotel – both are close to Petronas. I will update as this becomes certain. You will need to take the train in to town from the airport and make your way to the hotel. A draft program is attached: Date Day Location Comp Times Dec 27th Saturday Registration 9 am - 12pm pay and gear check (2pm Briefing) Dec 28th Sunday KL Tower 2 rounds 9.30am - 12.30 and 2 - 5.30pm Dec 29th Monday KL Tower 2 rounds 9.30am - 12.30 and 2 - 5.30pm Dec 30th Tuesday Petronas (Afternoon) Practice 2pm - 5.30 pm Dec 31st Wednesday Rehearsal and World Record 10am to 12.30 pm practice Jan 1st Thursday Rest Jan 2nd Friday Menara Telekom 2 rounds 10am - 12.30 and 2 - 5.30pm Jan 3rd Saturday Petronas 2 rounds 10am - 12.30 and 2 - 5.30pm Jan 4th Sunday Petronas 2 rounds 10am - 12.30 and 2 - 5.30pm Jan 5th Monday Closing Ceremony I will be the Chief Technical Director again this year and I need another great team of officials to help put this on. For those that have previously been involved in organising or judging I would appreciate you show your interest and commitment to this event by emailing me that your are hoping to assist again. I do also believe there may be room for one or two individuals to be involved in judging. This is a very tough job and you need to be good with extreme heat, computers, being strapped to the side of a building for a week getting a sore neck and ample criticism. The impartial individual really needs to display aptitude for minute detail and be confident defending their results. They need to be extremely patient. Your flight, accommodation and a token allowance will be paid. (If this sounds unreasonable please don’t apply). You will get some jumps when conditions permit – if you have previously officiated please work your remuneration out with Dann Lee. Please make your expression of interest known to me soon and provide detail about your abilities. A world record attempt (Most number of jumpers from a building) (I agree it becomes semantics when you compare it with Moscow tower) is intended for New Years Eve from Petronas. Those performing well in the comp and with previous credentials will be selected. This is a rare demo that is hard to surpass. Please go to the www.xtremeskydive.com.my website and register now– Also please forward this on to your foreign colleagues. They are welcome as long as they can vouch for their ability. If they turn up with poor gear or display poor skill or experience they will be removed. I will try and be quick in notifying of your successful application so you can start planning. I will be looking to try and get a balance of nations again so non english speaking will have a larger window of time to apply. I am hoping for the same happy crowd as last year. Roland Slim Simpson
