I wonder if using a mechanic's air hose to blow through the cable housing might be effective?

But if there's sand/grit/crap in there you've just blown it all over your rig and possibly into the reserve. I like the swab it out idea.

  3. If you go to the WFFC page and go to the other videos and watch Arano Rodriquez's video -

at about 1 min 49 sec a group exits the plane, group, what am I saying - it's a mass of humanity. They look like one of those Anaconda snake orgy balls. What is that exit called and what the heck are they hoping to accomplish by doing it?

    Thanks,

  4. [replyThere are only two other Army teams that I know of (Other than THE Army team)..They are the 82nd Demo team, and the 101st.

Don't forget the other services have demo teams as well -

There are the Navy Leap Frogs and I forget what the Air Force team is called.

I don't think the Marines have one. We never did like that showy crap - all business we are B|

  • The reserve is a Raven 249. My wing loading is about 1.1 (I'm just under 220 out the door). The harness felt fine, didn't feel like I was lopsided and I made sure the leg straps were symetric and tight before going up.

I had the left toggle down in the full flare position for entire ride down. I worried about the landing and decided the best I could do was feet/knees together and plf. Rolled the landing and everything was fine. I hope I never need the reserve again, but I'd like to be able to fly it if I do. If I had been heading into a tight LZ off of the drop zone, I'd a been SOL.

  • I had my first cut away and reserve ride this past weekend. The cut away didn't bother me - other than pissed I have to pay for another repack as this was the first jump after the scheduled repack!

The question involves the handling of the reserve. The rig has about 400 jumps on it and this was the first time the reserve has been used. What bothers me is that I had to fly it with deep left brakes to keep it straight. If I let up on the left brake it put it into a tight right hand turn. Both brakes were unlocked (I did think to check that) and I couldn't see any other reason for it. I heard a few people say this was characteristic of a Raven reserve but I don't buy that. The only thing I can think of is that the left brake line is longer? dunno.

Anyone got any ideas? I asked the rigger to check it out for me.

    Thanks,

  • I had a bunch all rolled into one yesterday!

I bought my first rig - used of course. A PD 230 main in a Javelin with a Raven reserve and cypress at a damn good deal. I'd jumped it several times the last jumpable weekend (shit weather here in New England...) to make sure it was what I wanted and would fit me etc.

It just had the reserve repacked so yesterday was the first jump after the repack and the first jump with me as the owner. Skydive went great - practicing turning with just my knees - wave, pull at 3,500 and I'm watching the thing open and thinking, this is taking a long time.....

The lines are a mess and the slider starts to come down - uh oh - the right front riser lines are through and around the left rear riser lines.... The slider hits the tangle, stops and there's no way I can kick out of this. About that time, it starts to spin hard and it's bye-bye Mr. PD, Hello Mr. Raven. So I get my first cut-away and first reserve ride as well. It was also the first reserve ride on the rig.

My first reaction - DAMN!! I can't jump anymore today unless I rent or borrow - I just bought a rig so I wouldn't have to do that!!!!

  • There was a blurb in there about UNCP forming a skydiving club! Does anyone know if it got off the ground? As a proud alum of UNCP I'd be interested to know.

I was driving home at lunch and heard an ad on the radio for this gem... puppetry of the penis is playing in my area.. has anyone heard of such crap?

It's been playing here in Boston for several months now. Apparently the women love it and all the men just cringe and hate it.

It's not on my list of things to see....

You may want to consider psychopacking it, but have some one experienced do it with you the first time or two - there are one or two tricks to it. But it is an easy way to handle snot-slick ZP and get nice openings, quite reliably. And it's FAST, too.

Psychopacking? What's that? PRO packing gone wild?

As I said, it's still a pot of cash and more in absolute terms than anyone else, looking at it in the way that usaid.gov does, i.e. by GDP, the US isn't quite as benevolent as you might have thought.

Give me a set of numbers and I'll make them say what ever you want them to say......

Oh - and I'm asking for the Swedish Bikini Team RIGHT NOW!

Thanks for the link! For some reason I hadn't been able to get a hit on them using the normal search engines. I guess I'll be saving up some vacation time when I get there.

  • I'm training for my first marathon in October. I've been getting advice from all my buddies that run and I've been using a mileage chart from www.halhigdon.com (the novice one of course). There are a lot of good tips on there and he has the poor slow rocks in the back like me in mind.

This is actually old news. I went through Sandy's course (which was GREAT, BTW) in January of 2002 and tested successfully through Tony. His dog (AC the Mastiff) loves me 'cause I'm one of the only people there other than he and Greg that will play with him.

How long is the course at the school? Can you do it on the weekends? nights? I ask because I'm about to take a job at U of Arizona just so I can go to Eloy. (I turned down two others because there was no drop zone nearby!!) I've been wanting to start rigger training for some time. I just get off on technology, figuring out how stuff works, how to keep it working and thinking about how to make it better....

Wing loading is a measure of how much weight each square foot of canopy has to hold up. Materials/planform have nothing to do with it.

    Dave

So in all this talk about wing loading requirements being tied to licensing - I was under the impression that was being put forth because there is a correlation of wing loading vs. performance - If I jump a zp and then a f111 of the same square footage, the performance between the two will be the same or no?

WL = exit weight (lb) / canopy area (ft^2)

    .

    so for you...

    200/190 = 1.05

? Doesn't it matter if it's a zp canopy or f111? Doesn't the type of material affect the wing loading formula?

of course if youre on rental gear you may not get the same rig all the time! but if you ask your instrocutors they will give you more guidance of the types of thing you should look for

Aye, there's the rub. I'm still on rental gear and I don't think I've jumped the same canopy more than 3 times max since I started jumping so as soon as I get used to a canopy, I get stuck with a different canopy - so it's either take what's there or wait 2 more hours for the one I used before since the DZ I'm at now only rents by the jump. I just counted in my log book - I've jumped 12 different rigs in 39 jumps, none more than 5 times.

I can't wait to try some braked turns friday but I think it's time to call Ralph.

Thanks for all the data points.

  • Another question in my quest for knowledge from experience before I try it myself....

I've practiced flaring at altitude but I've never held the canopy in full brakes for more than say 5-8 secs, 10 secs max. What happens if you put it into full brakes and hold it there? Will it start back sliding? Can you collapse the canopy completely?

For reference, I've been jumping a Navigator 260 lately. As with everything I assume the canopy sq ftage has something to do with it too....

    Thanks,
