  1. I was anti war but now that we are there I agree it is better to win it than not....

But... I was thinking this morning... I am honestly curious... has there ever been a situation in recorded history where a city under siege has welcomed its attackers with open arms after weeks or months of bombardment? I can not think of one, and I wonder what makes Rumsfeld think that after we lay siege to Baghdad for a month that the populace will turn on their "protectors", the Iraqi army, especially after WE have been bombing the heck out of them. Regardless of the use of precision weapons, we are still bombing the shit out of their city.

It really seems to me that historical precedent is for folks banding together against "outsiders"

  3. WAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAAAAAA!!!!

Anybody come up with a date on edition that article was in?

I need it soon, I am entering a swoop comp on my new canopy in tomorrow and I need to read up on how fly my shit....

Also I have a final exam in my race car driver class at junior college so if any of you have any practical experience that will give me a leg up there I would appreciate it.

    thanks

  4. Hey, do any of you recall which month's parachutist had that article that compared and contrasted Velocity vs Icarus canopies? I seem to recall there was a crap load of useful info in there (i.e. most efficient long distance configuration, etc.)

On a similar vein, having just acquired a velocity, what is the general consensus on dos and don'ts with these canopies.

For example, full stalls to canopy collapse.... I want to do this a couple times, to be fully in touch with all aspects of flying this thing...

However, I recall when Stilletos came out everyone said stalling to collapse was sure to result in a cutaway... went ahead and did it a few times no problem... any similar BS horror stories out there as regards the Vel?

    Danke

  5. ahhh, you'd be surprised... the military will overlook a lot of crap in the long run when it comes to newbies (short of UA, desertion, or drug use of course).
guy may do some civvy jail time, then some brig time, but if he emerges without a f'ed up attitude (sounds unlikely in this case, though) he can easily have a good stint or career ending with honorable discharge...

  6. The "no choice" part of this isn't true. There's no reason someone getting into CRW shouldn't just hook their CRW canopy to their existing rig.

What I meant was that for those CREW dogs out there who do jump round reserves exclusively... I think (Hookit please correct me here) that some of the newer rigs do not have manufacturer approval to install and pack round reserves in them...

However, some do, I am sure, so I am probably talking out my butt a little bit here... I am a bit out of the rigging game, so I am not sure if rigs like the Mirage, etc are round reserve compatible...

Note, I am not saying CREW folks are stuck with wonderhogs and stuff, that is obviously not the case, given that older Talons, Vectors, Racers, etc are round reserve compatible...

    Whatever....

  • Yo... slapped some new vectran on my canopy... line set purchased from P.D... question is:

Does vectran have some sort of silicon impregnation or something? Reason I ask is that after a few pack jobs, the rubber bands on the d-bag are now very slick, as if some stuff from the lines was being imparted to them.

obviously not a big deal, just curious....

    danke

  • what the f' is a bullet container?

Anyway, I think you are right to a degree. There are always teething problems with new designs... however, i think container design has reached a state these days that any reputable manufacturer's gear (note the qualifying "reputable" - there ARE some cheesedicks out there) is good to go...

if you are interested in CREW, you probably are soon gonna be faced with having no choice but jumping "older" gear... some of the newer rigs make no mention of installing or packing rounds in the instructions...

  • Well, I am not going to elaborate too much or name names of manufacturers for the following reason:

More than likely the problem was due to not 100% compliance with the manufacturers instructions... for example, if the reserve container is sized to fit a raven 150 (max), and somebody shoehorns a raven 1 in there... well, who is to blame?

there is generally some leeway in this... some folks can cleanly pack a reserve into a very small space, whereas others couldn't get the same reserve into the same container if their life depended on it... however, those folks cramming in the next size up reserve into a container it was not designed for are technically not following man. instructions and all bets are off....

I think my first reply should have been the conclusion to this reply....

if you stay within manufacturers recomendations for canopy (main AND reserve) / container compatibility, you will most likely be just fine...

if you go even one canopy outside the recommended range on either main or reserve.... bad shit can happen on SOME containers...

PM me if you want for specific incidents I am privy to, but you may not wanna bother, the gear I am thinking about is probably a bit old school...

  • Hey, don't make any assumptions that ALL possible container, reserve size and main size combinations have been tested.... a few years back a well known manufacturer (currently making a popular type of rig) had some incidents where people were experiencing towed reserve pilot chutes. This was due to "brickish" containers and total mals... with the main still in the container, the compression on the freebag was sufficient to overcome the drag of the reserve PC...

  • Yup.... I'll probably order some stuff up... let me know the effective length of your channels (I guess that means from entry to applicable stitch line at the end of the channel) and I'll order some either from RWS or AA

  • Hey, I took a spin through the "9 cutaways" thread, couldn't see any info on the following:

Where can I get some capped riser inserts?

I need them for a set of Eclipse risers, and since Eclipse is kinda not doing sport gear anymore, I doubt I will be able to get any from them...

    Should I call RWS?

  • Yo!

I am a semi-current rigger (I used to be "da rigger" full time at a NorCal DZ) and have relined a buncha stuff in the past. Just bought a Velocity, as well as a line set. My questions are:

    1) Is there anything very different about working with Vectran (in terms of the finger traps, bar-tacking, etc.) as compared to spectra?

    2) Could someone refresh me on how PD numbers their cells? For example, is A1 on the end-cell or the center cell?

    3) Control lines are still numbered the opposite of 2), correct?
