What does "converter" mean?

Recommended Posts

Looking at some of the Sony lens for my TRV-22. Some are listed as "wide angle lens"... some listed as "wide angle converter lens". So what is the difference?

Many thanks in advance.

A wide angle lens goes straight on the front of the mirror/film/ccd etc of the camera - ie it's the only glass you use.

A wide angle conversion lens secures in front of your ordinary lens, converting that first lens by whatever factor the conversion lens has. (eg 0.5 etc).

The problem you come across is that it's quite common for people to drop the 'conversion' bit when they're talking about conversion lenses.

On your TRV you're looking at buying a conversion lens as you're not going to be removing the stock bit of glass Sony puts in the body of the camera.

If you're buying for an SLR you might be after either - you could switch the whole lens assembly or you could put a second lens in front of it.
