Aaannd?

No. Haven't heard it.

It was in the 90's...
all sorta runs together anymore.

We had done several big venue air shows pretty
much 'in a row' and for those unaware,
air show performers are like a big family.
You continually run into the same people
all over the country,
and a kind of professional bond develops.

The time that I speak of,
the Russian contingent was making the
air show circuit for the first time ever.
They traveled the nation showcasing their top
aerobatic planes and pilots...
both civilian and military.

We'd worked the Oklahoma City show,
then one of the best and biggest going.
Met and partied with many from the Russian
group. Most all were at one time skydivers in
their country, and they enjoyed playing with our
gear and 'talking shop'.

(The translator traveling with them was this cute
little red head, from L.A.
a female airline pilot...we now have three kids!);)

The Russians put on a hellava show!
Their fighter routines were designed to blatantly
out class the standard, somewhat subdued
performances featured by the U.S. military.

The Su26 civilian aerobatic monoplane was also
being showcased...and put all others to shame!

The civilian performers watched with respect
and amazement.
The military wasn't so congenial...
Though polite, you could tell many of the Air Force
performers were shall say...
stressed...at being shown up in their 'house'.

Fast forward to the EAA Oshkosh show
later that summer...
Regarded as the biggest air show in the world...
it's a hectic week long affair that from a performer
stand point wears on you,
and when we as group get together
to blow off steam it gets
'interesting'.:)

Not far from the hotel where the performers
all stay is a little hometown bar that for the
week of AirVenture Oshkosh,
is taken over by the performers.

Cliental in the bar is 90% air show professionals
of one sort or another...
And of course jumpers being jumpers...
we often provide the 'entertainment'

Elmo had some free time that year,
being 'on the run' from yet another of his adventures
outside the law, and traveled with us to most
of the shows we did.

He was as charismatic and popular as always...
making appearances in the morning briefings...
up on the announcer stand, riding 'shotgun'
in the convertible that takes the performers
down the show line following their act.

Elmo even had his own stool in the over crowded
'air show bar' every night.
!/2 a beer in front of him and a burning cigar in his hand...
it was always a hoot to see someone 3 sheets to
the wind,
try to strike up a conversation with him.:S

On one night,
Elmo actually got invited to the "Back Room" of the bar.
A large area apart from the main room that was a
restaurant the 51 other weeks of the year.
It was mostly a gathering spot for the military
guys and gals of all branches.

Elmo was given a large chair in the rooms center,
so many back there could sit with him for pictures.

Gathering countless pins and patches from
armed forces groups worldwide,
Elmo was a hit!

The 'life' of the party!:$

Many were amazed to find just how well
old Elmo was 'outfitted' anatomically,
when some tried stuffing some of the
trinkets he'd amassed into his pants!:P

Many of the female "Ramp Rats" gave up their
jet jock 'husband for a night'
for a chance to "get to know Elmo" a little better!!!:D

In fact things were getting so crude...
We thought it best to give the old guy a break from the
action, and we took him outside for a little air.

.....As has been done before~

Shorty gets into the Elmo suit.
As he's doing so, the Russian guys...
also outside leaving the bar,
decide that in light of what
we the jumpers are doing...

They'll stick around a bit longer.

I throw Shorty over my shoulder...
just as I had Elmo on the way out.
And head back into the bar...

"Elmo" now sobered up,
is returned to his place of honor in the
back room where he sits silently alone
for half an hour.

No longer the center of attention he was,
to get things moving along...
a Russian pilot asks a female Army chopper pilot
to sit with Elmo for a photo...
She...in a happy stupor gladly complies.B|B|

"I vant picture of beautiful American pilot and
handsome parachutist together"
the Russian says.:)

"He IS a handsome man,"
she says sitting down 'ON' Elmo,

Reaching to his fly she loudly exclaims...
"AND.. the "Best Hung" guy in the room!"

The zipper is 1/2 way down when
Elmo turns his head
and lays a big sloppy kiss right on her cheek!:o

She screams...
drops her drink and heads for cover.

The Russians and the Skydivers are
on the floor laughing...

Most of the other guys there look around
confused, trying to figure out if
there's ALWAYS been someone 'in there'!!!>:(

....Well,
A couple of U.S. military guys with 'beer sensibilities'
thought the Soviets were laughing a bit TOO hard,
and wanted to reinstate their 'honor' ...
probably a building sentiment going back several shows.

Things cooled down...B|
And in the interest of Glasnost...

We sent Elmo packing! ;)

He has had some very similar experiences in stripper bars as well. Funny stuff.

...And,
I'm hear to tell ya!
He was called 'Shorty' and not "Skinny'
for a reason!!! :)

That ole guy was THICK! ;)
