PAGE -- Page City Council has authorized a lease at Page Airport for a sky-diving operator.

Go Sky Dive Moab, LLC, doing business as Sky Dive Lake Powell, was approved Thursday night for a one-year airport lease for parachute jumps. The proposal was approved by the city's airport board Nov. 8.

Councilmember Bill Diak said three potential landing zones are being considered by the operator:

-- The grounds of the former Canyon 9 golf course

-- A flat sandy area near the Honey Draw

-- The parking area for the amphitheater. The parking lot is made partly of millings left over from a road construction project.

City Manager Bo Thomas said Room 12 of the airport terminal will be leased for $252.08 monthly. Thomas said the operator already has acquired a city business license.

There is stunningly beautiful scenery in that area. It would be a real treat to jump over it. It's a very small town though, and a long way from anywhere. I wonder how much business he can generate in such a remote location.

“At its Nov. 8 meeting, the airport board recommended the lease of room 12 and use of the airfield for aircraft takeoffs, landings and parking,” Jentzsch said in the recommendation. “However, for safety reasons, they strongly recommend an off-airport landing zone.”

Robert Gray, owner of Go Sky Dive Moab, asked for a one-year lease to conduct parachute-jumping activities over the airport, but the approved lease prohibits using the facilities as a drop-zone.

I'd wager he'll garner a lot.
Not only is it a beautiful playground, it's a high traffic/tourist destination. He'll also have access to the new Navaho Casino and Grand Canyon tourism.

When we started to put together the Point Break Boogie there, interest from the city was exceptionally high from the city and C of C.

Unlike other cities in the area, Page was created in 1957 to house workers and their families during the construction of nearby Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. Its 17-square-mile (44 km2) site was obtained in a land exchange with the Navajo Indian tribe. The city is perched atop Manson Mesa at an elevation of 4,300 feet (1,300 m) above sea level and 600 feet (180 m) above Lake Powell.

After the dam was completed in the 1960s, the city grew steadily to today's population of 6,800. Because of the new roads and bridge built for use during construction, it has become the gateway to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell, attracting more than 3 million visitors per year. Page is also the home of two of the largest electrical generation units in the western United States. Glen Canyon Dam has a 1,288,000 kilowatts capacity when fully online. The other power plant to the southeast is the Navajo Generating Station, a coal-fired steam plant with an output capability of 2,250,000 kilowatts.
