Making a Malfunction Simulator

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Making a Video CD malfuction trainer for my wife and I. One of the features it will have is several chapters of short clips. These short clips will be footage of canopy openings and the malfunctions. Also part of the clip will include an altimeter in the bottom left side of the screen. We would use this by one of us simulating a dive while the other hits the next button on the remote to a preprogrammed "malfunction clip" and hits pause. When she gets to throwing out her pilot chute in her simulated dive I would hit play...and she would see whatever type of malfunction is there...if any...and would take corrective action. Then pause would be hit again...the altimeter read...and we could talk about timing etc. That's the goal. So we are looking for any video footage taken under canopy of openings and/or malfunctions for our simulation. We've got some good stuff from "Cutaway" and are just looking for other video out there to give the simulator more options. Any comments or suggestions (or video clips!) would be very much appreciated. B|

Oh that would be the heat to use those video clips. But I think making malfunctions is probably just a wee bit too much for my whopping 70 jumps worth of experience.

Yes, Bob's Mal footage is crazy... I think he has a really great system for training his students to deal with mals... he has a TV suspended over the hanging harness and they get a really nice realtime picture of the mal over thier head.

That's a good idea about the TV over the head... Have any of ya'll done that parachute malfunction simulator up in Cleveland? Harness connected to a desktop computer and you wear VR goggles. I guess they have several malfunctions in there so you actually look up and see your mal. Very cool in concept but they're the only DZ that has it (they claim). Would be nice to get a copy of that program.

If shes in a harness that dosen't have a reserve after she throws out the pilot chute grab her by the hip of the harness and start spinning her around and tell her it's a spinning lineover and to take proper action. I like this because it comes as a suprise and the handles may or may not be in the right place.

Sky HI Visuals has a video of all mals. It old, like back in the 70-80, but good tool for training. Also for a training harness simulator, I like the one at Ground Rush Skydiving Club in Tx. .......Most hangers have an I-beam with a cam on it, which you can hook a comealong, and move heavy parts around.......A rope, a bicycle rim, and an old harness, and you can send a student flailing around in circles. Make sure the reserve risers are connected to the rim good so the student doesn't fall to the cement when cutaway. Also you can push the student around and simulate turns and landing approaches with the aerial view of the airport below them on the floor.:)
