Dislocated

Recommended Posts

woaaaaaaah! hold on people before jumping into giving advice on surgery etc....i worked on an orthopaedic ward and this is a very common thing to happen....my advice is to see your doctor and take it easy, but whatever you do dont under use or try to protect the shoulder it is important to use it as you would normally and take some anti-inflammatory tablets. you are young and therefore your joints can withstand a problem like this. exercise is good but remember to repeat it on the OTHER shoulder too! with my medical training i dont know what with skydiving to add any complications but you know your own body and therefore only you and your doctor can advice on when to get back to it....if anything at this stage was to happen he will prob send you for an MRI scan on the joint to see if their is any permenant damage etc. but my feelings is that it will be uncomfortable for a bit and prob be fine in a few months. :)

I'm gonna step in here for a second and put on my "I'm a doctor and you're not" hat.

You're a student nurse. You probably know a fair amount about some things, but you are not a doctor.

There is a specific set of things you can do to rehab a shoulder which has been dislocated, which varies according to the nature of the injury. Telling someone to just take some advil and listen to your body is just plain inappropriate advice. Youth does not protect a joint against permanent injury. Injured joints don't just magic their way better, nor will they probably just be fine in a little bit. For proper healing to occur, especially in the face of injuries such as dislocation, directed therapies, both surgical and non-surgical are required.

So here's my advice, as a doctor, for someone who has injured a joint (doesn't matter what type of injury). Go see an orthopedic surgeon or a sports medicine specialist. They will be able to properly evaluate and treat you, which will include talking to you, doing an exam, and may or may not include imaging such as xrays, MRI, etc, and may or may not include physical therapy, surgery, medications, etc. None of the above can occur over the internet.

{laughing}
Just an update, I went to an orthopedic doc. He said to take it easy for a few weeks and sent me to physical therapy, which I start next week. He talked about surgery but said to leave that as a last resort. He is a sports doctor and said he has seen plenty of people recover just fine.
Thanks again for all the advice and info. Its good to know there are skydivers in the medical field, always a plus.
I will say(AND I HAVE NO HAT TO PUT ON) if you have an injury in skydiving go see a doctor, its worth it. We all are apart of an awsome sport and we all want to continue to jump and have the sport grow. So be safe and laugh, without laughing its just not fun...............

i believe nursing staff are very knowledgable and the highlighted parts of my advice is taken out of context and actually i did say on several ocassions to seek advice from your doctor and yes i know that im not a doctor! i am of a diferent disicpline to yourself.
