SgtDie 0 #1 November 9, 2011 I only have a tandom under my belt so far. Planning on doing my AFF this spring. I decided to watch some AFF clips on YouTube to get a better idea what will be expected of me to pass the levels. In one if the clips, the student on mutilple jumps would end up going I to a belly to earth flat spins at a high rate of turn. What would be some of the ways that cause this and how would you correct it?
chaospilot 5 #2 November 9, 2011 Jarid, welcome to the world of skydiving! Youtube videos and AFF flight techniques are better explained and taught by your AFF Instructor, so you are learning the correct techniques your local dropzone teaches, not those taught on an online forum. There are some good videos put out by the USPA that show the AFF Category jumps here: http://www.uspa.org/USPAMembers/Downloads/tabid/84/Default.aspx#2271 I see Harvey's Lake is your hometown, so you may be jumping at my dad's dropzone in PA, Endless Mountain Skydivers, if it is AWESOME, if not check it out http://www.jumpnepa.com! Also, check out a Wind Tunnel, where you can learn basic body position and body flight! GLIDEANGLE 1 #3 November 9, 2011 The primary cause would be trying to learn to skydive from the internet. The choices we make have consequences, for us & for others!
Austintxflight 0 #4 November 9, 2011 what you can't see is the person with the camera blowing to cause him to spin, much like a pinwheel, this is a common ploy instructors pull on their students to cause them to fail jumps and thus pay more money. Watch out for it.
skr 1 #5 November 9, 2011 > What would be some of the ways that cause this Usually it's lack of symmetry plus stiffness. Stiffness comes from fear and lack of knowledge. Fear is a good sign. It means you're paying attention, and realize that you are doing something totally fucking insane that mammals didn't evolve to do. What to do is find some instruction that you have some rapport with and make a whole bunch of jumps fairly close together. What you need is some experience with how your body and the air going by work together in freefall, plus some first hand experience that your parachute is going to open. That enables you to start to relax and begin to feel some control, which starts to remove the fear, and pretty soon you'll realize that it's a glorious insanity! So go make a bunch of jumps and report back with some jump stories :-) :-) Skr
pchapman 262 #6 November 9, 2011 Nice to see someone give the guy a straight answer. It is possible to treat skydiving knowledge as other than a secret, while not actually screwing up a novice's progression. Skratch didn't go into the kind of detail that would have the newbie practicing things incorrectly in his living room. @ the original poster: If there is any little unevenness or twist in one's body position, that starts a turn going, as air is deflected more in one direction than another, glancing off one's torso or arms or legs. That's no big deal if one knows how to remove that twist or counter it with one's arms and legs, but if not, the novice may just keep spinning and not be able to stop it. One might say that it is a "riding a bicycle" kind of thing -- Impossible to control before you 'get it', and then after that, really quite easy. SgtDie 0 #7 November 10, 2011 Thanks for the info guys. I know that I can't learn to skydive from book or the net. I will be going to endless mountain dropzone here in pa for my AFF this spring. And will be asking a ton of questions to my instructors. I just saw that crazy spin and figured to ask here. Since I'm not in class yet.
