Backpacking with a rig in the US

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I just need a bit of advice. I'm backpacking through the US for a couple of months towards the end of the year and would like to get as much jumping in as possible (would like to spend a couple of weeks at a time at different drop zones and therefore will be spending a lot of money on rentals). Instead I was thinking about picking up a rig, either used or by using one of the demo programs at certain DZs. I was just wondering if there is a way to transport a rig between the major drop zones (Perris, Eloy, Sebastian, Deland etc.) by using a courier service or something similar? Due to the nature of my trip I won't be able to transport a rig with me. Or do you think it would just be better to bite the bullet and rent a rig while I'm there?
Everything else is just noise...

You'll be able to drive from Sebastian to Deland...

That being said just use FedEx or UPS to ship to the next DZ. Call and let manifest know etc and they'll probably let you know what their requirements are.

I've seen it done a bunch...plus personally I'll generally ship stuff like golf clubs etc ahead of time if I'm going somewhere. Can be a bit spendy but the plus side is you can insure the full value of the rig for loss / damage / theft etc.

Dunno how much it would cost vs renting a rig everywhere.

I spent just shy of 6 months bouncing around the US in 2011/2012 and when you worked out the costs of transport, freighting stuff around, the hassle and everything else it was cheaper to buy a car and a tent.

I picked up a 2003 Santa Fe for 4600, sold it for 3900 when I left. insurance was only a few hundred for the 6 months and gas was way cheaper than any public transport and I camped for most of it at dzs and national parks.

Just my two cents :)
