AttmfC 0 #1 November 9, 2011 I just noticed that Sky Systems is using Poron XRD foam in a couple of their helmets. See youtube vids on Poron XRD - looks pretty impressive. Anyone have personal experience with this foam or these helmets? They tend to be over simplistic and don't provide any actual data on transfered impact. A good example is the testing of pads for ballistic helmets conducted by an independant lab that I posted in another thread. D30 for all practical reasons and from visual observations like the videos posted, would appear to be an ideal product to use for helmet impact mitgation. However, when the lab tested it, it proved to be a very bad product to use, so much so that after the initial testing of all the products and the data was reviewed they opted to not even continue using it in the test as they questioned its even being considered as an impact attenuation product. The point being that without REAL testing by an independant lab items like D30, Poron, etc might be good for something like elbow/knee pads but actualy very bad for use in helmets. Poron may very well be a suitable product but don't bet your head and your life on it based on a video. Here is a link to the study I mentioned, it provides a good deal of information on impact and head injury. http://www.scribd.com/doc/53423453/PadReport-Final"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
AttmfC 0 #4 November 10, 2011 Yep I agree. I remember that D3O article you linked to. Empirical data would be the real test here. Here's a video of impact in hockey helmets but again, it's just visual with no data associated. And the 2 helmets tested have different geometries, which I think could result in one cracking independent of the foam. Apparently Poron is being used in multiple hockey and football helmets, but I haven't found any tests of these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCRObBe3mZw
