Cell phone for kids

Recommended Posts

So a few years ago, I had an idea about creating a cell phone for kids. It would only have buttons to call parents, so the kids wouldn't spend minutes calling friends during math class, and a 911 button for emergencies. Well, someone finally invented it:

Firefly mobile phone for kids

They've made it so the parents can create a phone book with up to 20 necessary numbers, and lock the phone book with a PIN, so those are the only numbers the kids can dial.

It's currently only available in a few locations, but they plan to open it up and sell on-line in May, and then sell them at Target starting June.

I was planning on giving a couple of obsolete cell phones to some pre-adolescents in the neighborhood to play with, but this sounds like a better idea.

man i would hate to see the uproar that would happen if they tried to introduce that in the UK... it would be horrific!

It is a neat idea, however it's based on GSM technology so companies like Alltel, Cellular One, and Verizon won't be carrying them because they still use CDMA technology.

There's nothing to stop a relatively quick design and release of an IS-95 varient of this phone, except perhaps the failure of this initial GSM model.

An example of a popular phone available in both flavors is/was the motorola t720

Yeah they wouldn't sell well in the UK, they don't have colour screens or cameras and you can't text on them!
