Thanks for the link, I've been meaning to dig this out myself, but haven't had the time.
I spent extensive time in Sichuan last summer, about 100 miles from the epicenter, I'm pretty upset that this happened...

There is quite an amazing feeling, at least here in Shanghai, that lots of people outside of the affected zone are trying to help out. When I got to my office this morning, there was a woman settled by the elevator collecting donations (flashing credentials and all); I an going to an art opening at a gallery tomorrow, and 1/2 of the sales by the artists (one Canadian, one Chinese) are to be donated to an earthquake relief fund; my local hospital texted me today to inform me that they will be collecting blood tomorrow for earthquake victims in need; and I am going to a Bar-B-Cue on Sunday in one of my favorite week-end hang out, and all the proceeds (about $20/person) will be donated to a fund.
People donate in many different ways in different parts of the world, so this is by no means a judgment on other countries' practices. But the response at the ground level, at least in my neck of the woods, has been amazing.

I really wish I could be there to help out, the people of Sichuan found a place in my heart last summer, and this disaster depresses me...especially after the significant amount of time I spent at the schools in Nanbu. Although 100+ miles away from the epicenter I am still worried about my friends and wish I had a way to contact them.
