Industrial disasters and spills are very common.

Some were sudden and dramatic, like this one.

One of the stranger ones was the Molasses Flood in Boston 1919. Sounds funny at first, but 21 people died.

Others were the result of long term pollution. The Cuyahoga River catching fire in 1969 is a good example.
The long term dumping of PCBs into the Fox River here in Wisconsin (runs about 1/4 mile from my house) is another.
