~ Making this the year ~

Recommended Posts

I Just wanted to take the first step and Say hello.

It's been too many wasted years wanting to sky dive, yet always coming up with an excuse for why I have not yet.

Now at the age of 33, I am waiting no longer, This is the year I make that jump.

I've already made so many practice jumps from my couch that my neighbor below me has asked me if I wear a helmet to sleep.

I don't know what it was that kept me from doing it, I have no issue with planes, or heights, and respect the gear; but something just kept me from it for all these years, ( fear of the unknown ? )

That and bungee jumping did not help much, I thought that would have been a great starter step, but that " ground rush " feeling was a bit on nerve, all 8 jumps worth ..

So,

Here I am ~ looking forward to jumping from that plane this year and learning to fly on my way down. !

First off welcome to the forum. I was also one of those people that have always wanted to go skydiving, but never got around to doing it. Finally one day I decided to just go. I did my first tandem last year in Sep and did a second tandem not even a week later. After that, I knew I was hooked.

I finished up my AFF in February and now jump every chance I get. A good tool that you can use to help prepare yourself for skydiving is the wind tunnel. I was a little unsure on how I would probably do during freefall, so I did a couple of sessions in the tunnel the week before my training and it helped tremendously. After every jump now I kick myself in the ass wondering why I never made my first jump sooner. It is definately a new way of life that I am loving every second of.

Good luck on your first jump and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the welcome !

I am only a stones throw from the DZ in Perkasie Pa,

Even spoke with them over the phone a few times, they seem like good people that are well in the " Trust and Know " zone, so I feel no worries.

I wanted to hit a wind tunnel,

But I am having no luck finding any in Pa, I think the nearest ones may require a vacation trip, closest one I found is in NH, not bad; about a 6 hour drive. if anyone knows any tunnels in Pa, or the surrounding states, please let me know, if not, I'll keep looking,.

I only seem to now have two fears about sky diving,

1) kicking myself for not doing it sooner
2) becoming addicted and back to eatting peanut butter and jelly to support my addiction

Welcome from another relative newbie! As one other responder already mentioned the wind tunnel go a long way to helping you get acclimated. That and doing a tandem before AFF will get the "out the door" anxiety cleared up. I waited a lot longer than you did to get started in skydiving, like 15 years longer. Don't wait any longer - get out there! Let us know how that first jump goes.

Regarding bungee jumping - I don't think I could ever do that. There is no ground rush like that in skydiving. You don't really even feel like you are falling at all.
The meaning of life . . . is to make life have meaning.

the update:

The paid ticket is in my hand !

I went to two dZ's this weekend to feel them out. I will say no names, but let's say today was a learning experience....

Needless to say, one Zone was in operation today, small and in the middle of nowhere, I got there in time to watch a few land, but the people there seemed to be in " clicks " I don't over expect things out of people, but let's just say, I didn't feel at home at all... Could have been me. But I tend to go by " surroundings " just like walking into one of those bars where you just know your either leaving in a cop car or a meat wagon..

The second dZ was empty, but I decided to go in, one worker sitting behind the desk, Introduced myself and the next thing I knew 4 hours had passed by.

It was funny after leaving the first place I questioned if this sport was going to be promising. considering I would most likely spend half my weekend waiting for a lift, I was hoping to find a ": second home "

The 4 hours he and I spent talking about everything, he had an answer for. Everytime I said I was sorry for asking so many questions he laughed and pushed me to ask more questions.

I warned him that I could very easily become a fixture upon his Dz with my interest in wanting to learn how to pack and just be there if they ever needed any help, he laughed; and welcomed me to the family.

So I walked out with a total change in mind set of Dz's , the hardest part is out of the way, ticket in hand, a few bumper stickers and a AFF manual.

So now, It's just a matter of getting that phone call telling me to suit up, jump out and do it again, again, again!

;)

Awesome. I did my first jump after my 35th birthday last year. Now I'm working my way through the AFF program. If you can get video of your first jump. I think it's worth it. Be ready to rearrange your schedule every time there's a beautiful day. Have fun!
